How to talk someone into going to a doctor?

My Dad is up there in years. In Dec. he had a pacemaker/defibrillator implanted. Since then, he has been in hospitals twice. He is still at this time not well. Fluid build up, pains in the lower chest and back shoulders, headaches, which we think may be due to medicines.(?)

He has now suffered through all this (has gotten worse) for now two weeks.

We cannot talk him into calling the doctor. I asked if it was a matter of money, offered to pay. He said that was not it. I haven't a clue, other than he has grown to despise being in a hospital.

I just can't get him to call anyone. I am and have been ready to call myself, but I cannot force him to go.

What can be done?

I must be missing something, or am not thinking right. The emotions are high, I admit.

yeah, this sounds like my dad. He passed away last month of heart disease, the defibrillator was going off, but to no avail. I don't mean to scare you by saying that, everyone is different, and my dad only had half of his heart working at the time, but like someone said earlier, he may just have had it with the trips to the hospital ect .... you should talk to him one on one, remind him that he has loved ones that NEED him around. Spend as much time with him as possible. I really hope he changes his mind, and takes care of himself, for you and your families sake. But on the flip side, my dad, like your dad was not well, and it was in a way, "selfish" of me to want him to live like that.

You are not the only person facing this issue and you are right to be concerned. But worrying is not really going to help.

I suggest you ask your Dad can you speak to him about something very important.

Do it by yourself and say to your Dad.

Dad, I am very very worried about your health. I love you so much and the thought that you might get so sick that you really are very ill really worries me. I have not been sleeping. I worry almost all the time. I know that others in the family are also concerned.

We know you do not want to go to the doctor. I know for some reason you really are either afraid or just sick of it or reluctant or what - I am not sure.

Dad, honestly this is really really affecting me. I am very sad and almost beside myself with fear about this. Please Dad could you go to the Doctor.

I do not guarantee that he will but if you ask him like that - then you are asking him to do something for you. He may well love you more than he does himself.

    Cheers

My nana is the same way..she is not well and she won't go to the hospital or even her doctor. She finally made a turn around when the dr told her, "you will die if you don't take care of yourself" So now she exercises and is try to eat better. I would honestly ask your dad "Do you want to die? Cos that's were you are headed if you don't go see your doctor" Sometimes shaking the person up a little makes them realize!

A tough one! Although he should see somebody for his own sake, he also needs to to so for his family's sake. Let him know this....I'm sure you have allready. As you know, problems with the heart are serious, so if he still refuses, maybe talk to his doctor, get him/her to do a home visit and maybe they could advise him on what's up and persuade him to go into hospital if necessary. Good Luck! x

Have some respect for his situation and his age. He may very well have decided enough is enough and you must respect that and accept it. You might ask yourself if your greater concern here is his future well being or your future loss.
