Have you ever heard of putting Carrots in Chili?!?

My gf and I are having a dumb dispute. She thinks its normal to put carrots into chili, but I have never heard of this before. We are both from the same reason. I think her "chili" should therefore be called a "stew"

Sure, shredded are good in chili especially those made with dried chilies as the carrots add a sweet component. Also add 1/4 cup of shaved Mexican chocolate which is the secret ingredient.

That depends on the maker. If she wants to put carrots in and call it chili then let her. If your chili does not have carrots then so be it.

Forget the dispute and enjoy the food.

Ask yourself, what do you gain by forcing the point? Let her have this and when you make your chili just leave out the carrots.

putting carrots in chili is not unheard of.

Very fine diced carrots will help to even out the acid in the tomatoes and add a slight sweet note in the background. (I usually use brown sugar for this but carrots would work and not be a processed sugar)

Make sure you allow enough simmer time for the carrots to break down and not be a distinguishable item in the chili.

I have to agree with you on this one...I have never heard of putting carrots in Chili, and yes I also agree that it would be more of a stew thing.

Well I think it depends on how you learnt how to cook it (ie what your mum/grandma etc did).

I personally also put them in and always have in chili. However I often put grated carrots in many things with meat sauces (chili, spagetti etc) so that the kids get some hidden vegetables :0)

My husband is a veggie-phobe but has yet to realise that I always put them in anyway, so even if you win this one..... she can still put them in anyway. Women eh!

i've heard of anything and everything put into chili. A stew to me is a bit lighter and not as chunky as chili.

Then it's not chili. But then if I put beans in it, I don't call it chili either. I am a chili-purist. I do make and love chili-flavored stews with beans and meat, but it is not chili. It's chili helper.

eh, maybe compromise and call it "chili stew"

i have never put carrots in my chili (but i have put corn) but it's a free country
