How much faster would I ride with the same effort by switching from a hybrid bike to a road bike.?

Currently I have a 5 year old or so Marin hybrid bike that I use to commute to work once a week. My ride is about 17 miles and it takes me about an hour and fifteen minutes or longer. If I got a reasonably priced lighter bike.. maybe a flatbar road bike.... how much time am I likely to save on my commute?

    4.3 minutes

    on a good day

won;t be worth it, unless you have some other reason to switch

if you weigh 150 and the current bike weighs 30, that;s 180

if you save 10 lbs [a LOT], it;s only 5.5%

even that doesn;t matter on flats or going downhill

in fact you go faster downhill with a heavier bike

[though it doesn;t come out even, lighter is still faster overall, just saying]

if the tires are thinner, they may have less air and rolling resistance

if your position is lower, that would save some air resistance

    i'm guessing 5%

    no way to know really

best way to go faster is get stronger

    wle.

For the amateur rider - the main mushy selection could be a hybrid. those are sturdy motorcycles for shorter journeys - under 10 to fifteen miles. For the pro rider - a highway bike may be the main mushy. the way you're describing it...get a hybrid. Hybrids will artwork ok on mild off-highway trails of packed earth or finely crushed stone. highway motorcycles frequently do no longer user-friendly too properly under those situations. the two bike could certainly artwork properly on city streets. user-friendly warning...in case you ever try experience & discover the superb highway bike that feels mushy to you - you will never desire to experience something back. i'm hooked. have been given a "traveling highway bike" with somewhat wider tires that may pass on mild trails, i.e. Katy path in Missouri with out issues what-so-ever.

The difference will be mostly the reduction in wind resistance and the resistance of the tires. On mostly level ground you should save 7 - 10 min on your trip.

  • If you put Nitrous Oxide in the tires of either bike you will haul buns : ).

Source(s): Laughing gas could put real fun in bicycling. Think about it! A tiny weed whacker engine with a little No2 injector bottle and you will get a kick up any hill - just like the Jato rocket bottles of the 40's and 50's
