Steaming your face (facial) twice a week, is it bad?

I would like to know is it really bad to steam your face to clean the dirt off twice a week? I am pregnant and my skin is getting darker and darker. I also have dark spots on sides of my lips due to dry skin. please do help me how to keep my skin smooth and neat. I drink lots of water. but that itself is not helping :(..

Congrats... I am the mother of a two year old son too. And my skin went through quite a bit in the initial phase of my pregnancy. During pregnancy the melanin production goes on an overdrive, cos of all the hormonal changes. Check out this cool site.. www.babycenter.com.. for all you want to know on pregnancy. It was my Bible when i was pregnant.

So due to all the body changes, a pregnant woman is more likely to face a pigmentation issue. So you must stay out of the sun as much as possible and you have to use a good quality sun screen every day regularly.

Also instead of doing a steaming twice a week, follow a daily schedule of cleansing, toning and moisturising every night. Use a gentle scrub twice a week and it should do the trick. Avoid steaming and get a good relaxing facial once a month at your fave salon.

Here is one of my fave home made face pack receipes.. try it... take a spoon ful of milk powder, a lil honey, a pinch of turmeric and a few drops of lemon juice. Mix it all. Apply on face and wash off after 15 minutes. You can do it everyday. Honey helps moisturise and the others add a glow.

You are doing the right thing by driking loads of water. Also eat lots of salds and fruits. If you are still concerned about your problem, then visit a good skin clinic like Kaya where they can analyse your skin, esp given your condition, and recommend some solutions. If it is a summer related issue then they have these unique summer packages that you can look into. Take care.. and enjoy your pregnancy. I always thought it was the least stressful time of entire motherhood :-)

Leave the water to cool a little bit or add a little cold water, then it should be fine. Steaming your face is very good for helping to deep cleanse your skin, but don't do it more than once a week as you could end up with broken (thread) veins. You can buy facial steamers that are temperature controlled, and they are a lot less hit-and-miss.

I wouldn't think it would do any damage to your skin as it's only hot water after all. If your skin is dry though, I'd maybe use a moisturising cleanser and a good moisturiser each morning and night and avoid any harsh scrubs or toners. Drinking plenty of water is good as well so I would keep doing that.

I have heard of women's skin getting darker during pregnancy due to all the hormonal changes that er taking place. Chloasma I think it's called? It Can sometimes affect women on the contraceptive pill as well. If you're really worried about it, ask your GP for some advice.

Actually steaming is NOT bad for your skin but when used alone does not do anything for your skin but temporarily contract pores and soften oil/etc in your pores. While steaming I suggest you use an exfoliant to loosen up whatever is in your pores then after apply a clay mask to draw and soak it all up. It will NOT help with the darker skin as that is a hormonal issue but the regular exfoliation will help. Remember to moisturize and see your OB GYN about what you can do to about the pregnancy mask. Do not attempt to lighten your skin.

    hey girlie:)

sad to hear about your situation Bummer:( But i have a quick and easy suggestion for you maybe you should try steaming it with a warm mixure of microwaved gylcerin (can be found on drugstore.com and most any drugstore should carry it and its only 5 bucks) Buy a small spray bottle>100% pure glycerin> and add purified water to this mix . Spray on while you are in the shower and let it steam your face or microwave mixure.Read instructions on the back of the glycerin bottle and i promise You that you will have skin as smooth as silk within a the first few hours of using this make sure to use everyday lol :) thanks for your time hope i helped:)

I would suggest you rather follow the scrub, clense and moisturise scheme...

definitly keep your skin well hydrated and moisturised, coz if your skin is dry you can get really bad strech marks on ur tummy, breasts and bum.

On your face you can also try some lightening cream, if you think ur skin is geting darker...
