A good starting place is with your local Business Link. They're very good at helping with hygiene certificates and other things to do with starting your business. Most of their services are free.

As others have said, make friends with the local Environmental Health people. Work with them and they're really helpful - ignore them at your peril.

    Good luck!

Phone up your local Environmental Health Dept. Do nothing until you have received advice from them. You will need to go on a one day course to get your Health & Hygiene certificate, you cannot trade without it.

if you are selling cakes privately at car boot sales or fetes for example i don't think you need any certification but i assume if you are a starting a business you need to worry. Don't know what the min. requirements would be though
