My dog was stung by a wasp. Should this be a vet trip or can a pit lab mix get over the swollen lip?

Watch your dog for excessive facial swelling, difficulty breathing, lethargy or other abnormal symptoms beyond a bit of swelling. If you observe anything abnormal, get him in to the vet immediately, he could be having an allergic reaction. Otherwise, as with humans, if he isn't allergic the swelling will go down given a bit of time. You can also phone your vet and ask what the appropriate dosage of Benadryl would be for your specific dog, it can help to take the swelling down and relieve itching.

The dog should be fine. He'll experience some mild discomfort around the area where he was stung. Keep an eye out for any increase swelling and irritation, shortness of breath, etc. that can indicate he's undergoing an allergic reaction. If your dog is showing these signs, get him to a clinic immediately. But I'm sure your dog will be a trooper :)

I would keep a close eye on your pup to make sure there is not an allergic reaction. If you see that he/she is having problems with breathing then I would go to the vet. I've heard of people giving their animals children's benadryl but I would at least call the vet and ask before doing that.

it will be fine, and hopefully learnt that its not smart to try and eat a wasp. If you are really concerned call the vet, and if they are any good they will tell you if you need to bring dog in.

lol I had a english springer spaniel that decided to eat a bee..it stung her on the roof of her mouth....what a mess.
I called the vet because she went from english springer spaniel face to shar-pei (you had to see it)....he told me the proper dosage of Benedryl to use and what to watch for.....in a few hours the face went down & I had an english springer again but wow, poor baby.
Call your vet. Now.

If the dog was severely allergic you would see signs like seizures, tongue swelling etc
If it is just some swelling call you vet and ask if them what you can give him.

I would just watch for any breathing problems .. put ICE on it. mAKE sure ice isn't directly on the skin. wrap it up in a towel.
Use ice regularly throughout today esp if gets quite swollen.

Use Tea Tree Oil. Its all natural.... non toxic.....and an antibacterial solution.
Any health food store will have it, and I'm pretty sure Wal-Mart carries it in the vitamin/supplement section. (LOTS of uses!)
