Is it legal for auto loan companies to contact neighbors?

My bank with my auto loan is really pissing me off. I was late on a payment like 20 days and they contacted my neighbor. No idea how they got her information, but then she came over and asked if I knew who "so an so" company was because they called her and asked if I parked my car near by and they told her that I was late on my account. Is that even legal? It was 20 days late for god sake. These people are really rude on the phone and have all kinds of threats like a loan shark almost. Is there someone I can report them to besides the better business bureau?

The FCRA that one poster mentioned has nothing to do with this, since the FTC's FCRA covers credit "reporting" not collections.

That poster must have been thinking of the FTC's FDCPA, which also has nothing do to with an original creditor, only collectors.

Original creditors can contact "anyone" to collect a debt. If they contact your neighbors "once", that is legal. (unless your states laws say otherwise*)

What could be considered harassment would be if they contacted the "same" person, who is not living in your household, more than once.

*If your state has it's own version of a FDCPA, not the federal version, and it also includes original creditors, somes states do, then the creditor may have violated state laws by contacting your neighbor and telling them about your debt.

Yes it is legal for credit agencies/collections to contact neighbors. I saw it on the Suze Orman show a couple of months ago.

They get this information from purchasing reverse phone books.

To see what credit agencies/collections are allowed to do, there is a link on www.suzeorman.com

well it depends, if you gave your neighbors or friends/ family as references, then yes it is their legal right to contact them, BUT if you did not give them the names and they just took it upon themselves to call on your neighbors by looking up addresses and phone numbers, then that is an invasion of privacy and Yes my friend that is illegal, but no way should they threaten you or any of your friends family ETC, the fist thing you need to do is get witnesses to verify they are harassing you and threatening you, Go to an attorney, and press charges, not only will they have to stop, but they end up paying you a huge chunk of money,

Yes, they can contact your neighbors, your co-workers, your family, your mail person, etc. as long as they do not discuss your debt. They are allowed to use sources to locate you, however they can not tell anyone how much you owe.

I would guess thats Invasion of privacy. They have no right to tell your neighbor whats going on with your business. BUT, lawyers offer free consultation, you might wanna call one up and see if you can sue their asses.
