setting up wireless network?

it's pretty much easy to setup a wireless Network . i am assuming that you are good at making configuration and have basic knowledge of modem and router . so you must be having internet connection terminating at your modem (via PBX phone line) . after that a ethernet cable is connected to between your modem and DESKTOP . you can take out the terminal end of that ethernet cable from your DESKTOP and can connect that to your router ( or you might have got a ethernet cable with your router you can use that too) after that you need to connect your router with a desktop or laptop via ethernet cable for making initial configuration you can do that by accessing i.p 192.168.0.1 .. it's default user name is admin and password is blank and there u can give the default configuration and it would be ready to go . you can refer this MICROSOFT guide for further assistance

Check what wireless security your PC and laptop wireless devices support, if both WPA or WPA2 then setup the router with a WPA or WPA2 security configuration and set a password and select a channel to use, set the SSID which is what the connection will show up as on the laptop and PC.

The router will usually come with a CD to configure the router.

I urge you not to use it and actually learn what configuration settings you have and why they are that way.

To configure manually you open a web browser and navigate to either http://192.168.0.1/ or http://192.168.1.1/ and enter a password that is in the manual or search for the default password on the web.

The config pages are usually self explanatory with section links and section headings.

You will need to initially connect to the router with a CAT5 network cable into one of the 4 LAN ports, not the WAN port.

After router is configured, on both the laptop and PC you can usually see your wireless router's SSID using windows' own wireless connection software.

If using linux then you should do a search because each distribution has its own unique way of doing it as it usually requires configuration file changes.

First , you need to setup the router , once you have configure the router and wifi settings then FIRST make sure that the laptop connects to it then , run a cat 5 cable to the pc and verify that it too connects to the internet then ping from the laptop to the pc and viceversa.
