Is it too late to plant potatoes?

I live in N. Ireland and only started growing some veg last year - onions, garlic, peas and herbs so haven't alot of practical knowledge.

A friend gave me some seed potatoes and wonder if its too late to plant them.

Thanks

I don't think so. Get them in this month though.

I've been planting potatoes in containers over the last couple of weeks, they're growing like mad at the moment, and still have a few left.

Ask your friend what the variety is. There are different varieties of potatoes, 1st earlies are ready in about 10 weeks after planting, 2nd earlies in about 13 weeks and maincrop about 20 weeks. I have 1st and 2nd earlies.

Take a look at some of the seed catalogue sites, the BBC gardening, or Allotment Growing, are just a few that have potato growing tips you may find useful.

Probably a bit late for early potatoes but if they are late (or main crop) seed then should be OK along now but don't hang around too long. In gardening there are so called rules for planting and sowing but these rules can be very flexible. Speak to other gardeners or allotment holders and they will always give some help as they are generally a friendly bunch. Just remember that it can all depend on the weather and even if it says on the seed packet sow in April you will waste your time if the ground is cold and wet. If you are supposedly a bit late in sowing and planting out, well don't worry too much as things usually catch up. Have fun and you will learn as you go along. We have all done the same.

do potatoes have seed? How 'bout buying the potato itself and plant it on the ground, unless it's damaged or filled with scratches, then it'll have a 50% chance of living.

Get them in A.S.A.P.- the commercial main crops are only being planted now. You will need to watch out for blight though,as it is only the earlies planted in Feb./March that are harvested before it is a problem.

    Hi there,

No you are not too late - I planted 3 lots last weekend and will be doing another two lots this weekend.

Hope this helps, happy planting :-)

My dad planted some new potatoes a few weeks back form a sprouting one, so it shouldn't be too bad.

Just plant a couple, just experiment :)
