Is my daughter to young for this?

My mother lives right down the street. I'm talking like 12 houses. We don't live on a super busy road and the speed limit is 30 mph. Do you think my 7 year old is too young to walk to her Grandma's by herself?

Update:

Well, obviously I won't be picking pfam!

No, not at all. Maybe the first couple times watch her go as far down the road as you can see (i don't know if it's curvy or hilly or whatever).

Make sure she knows to be safe near the road, her phone number, not to talk to strangers, all that good stuff.

One thing to think of... have you checked for registered sex offenders in the neighborhood? If there aren't any close, I'm sure she'll be fine.

The age that I would let my child walk to another person's house 12 houses away is school age, and at least 2nd grade school age. Not to be sexest, but since mine are boys that fits into my age allowance, a girl would probably have to be a little older. Not because she is a girl, but because they are more preyed upon.

Someone above asked if you know your neighbors, that is a great question. I grew up in a small town, we knew everyone. We live in a much bigger town and luckily, I do know my neighbors and they know my boys.

If you know that she's not a roamer ( a child that bolts whenever they get a chance) then I don't see a problem with it. I would watch her the first few times to make sure. Do the first degree on safety and when she is ready for herself have her call you when she gets there. If you need to make sure walk it and time it out for yourself. Set a timer for how long and if you don't get a call from her within a few minutes then call them to make sure. Sounds a little bit paranoid I know but it never hurts to be safe.

I was allowed a whole lot more than that as a kid. But this is one of those thing that comes under personal preference. If your not comfortable with it, then don't.

You know how dangerous it is in your neighborhood a lot better than a bunch of people on here, who don't live there. And how responsible/careful your kid is better than we do.

But they do grow up. Just use you best judgment. Then don't second guess yourself. You know how much risk you can tolerate.

I think she will be fine, just teach her to stop look and listen, don't talk with strangers. maybe walk down to the end of the drive way and watch her. Or maybe have your mom meet her half way. I personally think it's fine.

But do you trust your neighbours and the people who live around you?

Can you see her all or almost all the way? Will granny call as soon as she gets there? I would let her walk but I would be on my front porch to see that the child arrived safely in case of strangers etc. Also, I would ensure granny phoned when she got there.

Okay! I think that your child should just know the saftey rules and know how to make sure no one tries to do anything to her. Just be careful maybe have grandma waiting for her half of block for now. Just for her saftey

not at all! when my kids started walking a little ways by themselves, We layed towels down in the hallways and had them practice safe walking and crossing the street. then the first few times, we walked a little ways with him until we were sure he knew the way.

I would say wait until she's 10 or 11 because then she'll probably have a cell phone (right?!), so if anything happens she can call you (or 911 if it's an emergency)
