Two ships A and B are steaming at constant speeds, ship B being 10 nautical miles east of A, which is steering a south-westerly course. After 1 1/2 hours have elapsed, ship B is 5 nautical miles directly ahead of ship A. If ship A has a speed of 12 knots, find the speed of ship B.

    OK, I'll have to make some assumptions. First, it is ship B that is traveling in a south-westerly direction. Ship A is traveling due south. A knot is the equivalent of 1 nautical mile per hour. If ship A is traveling at 12 knots, then 18 nautical miles are covered in 1.5 hours, which means ship B is 23 nautical miles from the origin of ship A. Now we have a right triangle with sides of 10 and 23. Using the Pythagoras theorem, 10^2 + 18^2 = 424 and the sqrt(424) = 20.59. So ship B must be traveling at 20.59 knots.
