being that im not an american-african i cant much speak to why folks like yourself might have a problem with it.
i can say that many people only know stereotypes and when folks dont fit the ones they have in their heads it can cause confusion and even animosity.
its all quite silly...but humans are known for that.
i say, like what you like and others can get over it...or not.
funny...if it werent for the old black blues players, there probably wouldnt even be rock and roll...
now playing: how will i laugh tomorrow - suicidal tendencies

It's because people are ignorant. They don't get that music is for everyone, no matter what the tone of your skin is or anything like that.
For some reason people think that black people have to listen to rap and white people have to listen to rock. I'm white and I remember back in middle school I used to love rap and I caught crap for it every day. I was called things like a "Wigger" every day.
You should really just listen to whatever you like and not let anyone tell you differently. Anyone who would even give you a weird look for that is just dumb in my opinion.

It all has to do with the stereotypes created by our society. Ex: Black guys listen to rap, white guys listen to rock, mexicans listen to rancheras, etc. So dont feel bad about yourself if the people around you begin to judge you because of the music you listen to. Its their problem. But as time goes on im sure all these meaningless stereotypes will be broken and forgotten. hope this helps.

Stupidity?
Just like when white guys try to say Rock is white people music.
Firstly.... Rock is directly descended from Black Musicians, popularized amongst whites by Elvis.........
And music, last I knew was colorblind. Some types of music may appeal predominantly to people from certain cultures ( ie, Metal usually speaks from a perspective more white kids Identify with, Rap often with what inner city black kids identify with... but to try to limit what one likes based on skin color? Idiotic )

its the same when a white person listens to rap. Its a stereotype. Since most blacks listen to rap and most whites listen to rock, most people think its strange or weird to hear a black person listening to rock, or a white person listening to rap.

Probably because the stereotype is for blacks to listen to R&B, hip hop, or rap.

They think it's not cool because you defy stereotypes that way.
That's perfectly okay, as long as you're being yourself.
