What are some Mythical occupations(ex:Grim Reaper)?

I was thinking a great story would be for someone to be given a very strange new occupation but I thought that the Grim Reaper was overdone and so is Santa Claus, the tooth fairy and the Easter Bunny don't have much to tinker with. What other mythical occupations do you know of (a list or a link to info would be nice) that are interesting to you?

Update:

the auditors of reality have already been used

well there is the sandman. the sandman controls time, and has the ability to make anyone fall asleep. you could probably do something cool with that.

you could just make something up. if you want to make something like this, all you really have to do is make a character and give it a vague, seemingly mundane occupation as a name; such as 'the watchman' or 'the architect' or 'the gate keeper' just something like that. then make them seem really important, like for example the watchman can be the man watching the source of all life in the universe, or the architect might have been the one that designed the human mind and good and evil, or the gate keeper might guard the door to some alternate reality. get creative.

Hmmm...Keeper of time...fairies (they "wake" up nature...think "Fern Gully")...Cupid was a matchmaker, as was Aphrodite/Venus...there was the god of the underworld named Hades in Greece and Pluto in Rome (the underworld was called Tartarus in Greek mythology)...I can't remember his name, but there was the boatman who carried the souls of the dead across the river Styx and into the underworld...

You should look into Greek, Roman, Norse, Viking, and Indian mythology. You'll find a huge wealth of interesting occupations within. :)

There could be the Closer. An entity that slowly takes memory and thought away from the elderly until the person is closed away from what they once were.

    Source(s): I am "elderly."
