Looking for aquatic snails?
I need help finding some good aquatic snails.
I'm done with golden apple/blackmystery snails. I've bought a bunch of these. They have their own aquarium. I was trying to raise them in part to provide live food for a green spotted puffer. But it's not working. The snails keep dying for no reason that I can determine. The eggs often fall off into the water, or if the egg sac does stay where it's been laid the snails never hatch or hatch very few.
I used to have red ramshorn snails years ago and they were great. Unfortunately the fish suddenly discovered they tasted great and managed to wipe them out.
What would be a good species of snail for me and where could I order them from?
The pet stores in my area are not big on offering snails.

If you're looking for snails to breed for food, your best bet would be Trumpet Snails.
These are the long cone ones that most people don't like because Clown Loach can't eat them (I on the other hand add them to every planted tank i make due to their uses of eating algae and keeping the substrate fresh).
They are Hermaphrodites so you only need 1 to start them breeding and they breed fast. The downside to them is that they live in the gravel (which means you'll have to scoop out some gravel to get them) and they don't lay eggs.. they give birth to baby snails. On the other hand, this is also the upside :)
Common Trumpet snails are found in aquatic stores as pests since they come in on plants, and then start to breed. These will tend to be free, but there are some other types that they charge for.
