whats ur Opinion on Mom giving 9 year old Marijuana?

What is your opion on this?

Writer Marie Myung-Ok Lee pushes marijuana on her 9-year-old son. She mixes it in cookies and teas. She offers him hits from a bong-like vapouriser — whatever it takes to get him high. But she’s not some kind of hard-partying “if it feels good, do it” hippie mum.

Lee is trying to help her autistic son, who spends large parts of his days and nights in pain from an inflammatory bowel condition and the results of an operation on his spinal cord. And also from aggression that is symptomatic of his autism.

Does it work? Mmmm kind of. Is it illegal? Sort of but not really.

Lee lives in Rhode Island, one of 13 states that has legalised the use of marijuana for medical reasons. Her son’s doctor signed off on it. The benefit to her son is better sleep, less aggression and a way to avoid “sedating, antipsychotic drugs like Risperdal.”

Writing for Double X, an excellent new smarty pants women-focused Web site that launched yesterday, Lee explains how she settled on pot, how she gets it an, so far, whether it’s working.

But since we started him on his “special tea,” J’s little face, which is sometimes a mask of pain, has softened. He smiles more. For the last year, his individual education plan at his special-needs school was

full of blanks, recording “no progress” because he spent his whole day an irritated, frustrated mess. Now, April’s report shows real progress, including “two community outings with the absence of aggressions.

Anybody else out there medicating with pot? What do you think of this mom’s solution? What about the criminalisation of marijuana in the first place?

Wow, interesting question indeed. My first thought is to get this boy started on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. http://www.pecanbread.com/ It could very well make a huge difference in his digestive system. I have a friend who's son suffered bloating, diarrhea or constipation constantly until she started him on the SDC. She did it strictly for a couple of years before he could gradually go off of it. After less than two weeks he announced "The tummy doesn't hurt any more." It didn't cure him of his autism, but the difference in his quality of life was more than worth it.

Gateway drug? Obviously these folks don't know anything about autistic children! LOL! I could see how a parent could come to this decision. It's probably alot safer that risperdal with more benefit.

What a fantastic question! When I saw this in my brain I was like, "WHAT?!?" So, here's my point of view:

I think that it's great that a mom has found something that will help her autistic son to help him improve his autism. It's great, but it's sad that society is resorting to using drugs that are illegal in most states.

But my only question would be.. Does the boy know that he's really on drugs? If he does, that's horrible and will probably continue use with drugs throughout his whole life. If not, then hopefully, doctors have found a some-what good "cure" for autism.

  • When I first saw your question, I thought "What?? That sounds irresponsible! I mother shouldn't encourage her son to do drugs!"

But once I read the whole thing, I realized that it's okay. If it was prescribed by a doctor for medical reasons, it's taken in moderate dosages, and it's helping his autism, then it's not a problem at all.

The problem with non-prescription marijuana is that people will take way too much of it, it might not be clean, and it can lead to using other drugs. In a controlled scenario, it's just like any other medication, and often children will not take medicine on their own without their parents forcing them to.

Its great that the marijuana is helping her son. I also think people should only use it for medical reasons. It is afterall, a natural substance grown in the earth.

if it is being used for medicinal uses its perfectly fine - as it is here.

the little boy was in pain - now not so much - anything that alleviates pain off of a child is fine with me as long as it won't cause further pain further along the line which it won't here as long as he understands that concept of drugs and how they are usually bad for him and that the only reason he can take marajuana is because the good outdoes the bad in this one situation - if it explained to him properly everything will be fine.

    thanks, interesting question ,starred! lol

I have to say... I'm torn.

Good: The marijuana relieves him from pain and helps him, which is fantastic!!

Bad: My mind has been twisted by society and it just sounds weird to know that a mother is drugging her son.

Too be honest with you I'm conflicted. I could argue both sides on this I guess

Pro: A mother has found something that has helped her son improve. He is less aggressive. The doctor has signed off on it saying it is ok for him to use.

CON: Who in their right mind would give a 9 year old marijuana. It is a gate way drug. By giving him this she is opening the door for him to try all kinds of new things. Oh my mom let me have weed maybe I will try alcohol. Maybe cocaine, crack, e, and all the other hard crap out there. It is down right disgusting to give him drugs. What kind of mother would approve of such thing even if it is for medical reasons? I'm sure there are other things she could try with him.

I think for medical reasons it is absolutely justified.

not a good idea, next the kid wants beer. most people go out and do these things, i did as well.

but if i had a younger brother for example, i would not want him having the same bad habits that i use to have.
