I'm gonna date myself a bit here, and I'm sure either your teacher or you folks mentioned this, but why not just go to the local library and ask for microfiche? I was in high school when the Internet really took off, and we spent hours at the school library doing research for projects.
Another bonus for microfiche is that much of it IS newspaper clippings. I ended up going to college, which also required non-Internet sources for papers - for journalism. Now the archives of our really old papers are saved as microfiche at area libraries.
You can try doing random searches, I found some really old stuff for an old newspaper project in college, but your best bet would be the library.
