What is the nature of Sin?

What is the cause of sin? Can sin be inherited?

Please be as descriptive as possible. I will try to respond to as many answers as I can, I prefer a discussion to simple Q&A.

Update:

So far there are 4 answerers but really only 2 answers. One is that sin does not exist and is merely a creation of man. The other is that sin exists as something that was brought into this world by an ancestor and is somehow inherited.

The first answer is merely explaining away sin as a human construct. It is no way explains why we have a concept of sin or where that concept may have come from (if it is in fact invented). Also, how does the creation of the concept of sin allow one person to control another?

The second answer is more dogmatic in that it explains in the form of a set formula with regard to adam and eve. What about adam and eve makes their act sinful? how is any sin I commit related to adam and eve?

It also describes sin as something which can be inherited, but does not talk about how a sin can be inherited or what in sin's nature allows for it to be inherited.

-still not the answers i'm looking for

Update 2:

"The tendency to sin may be inherited, but sin itself must be deliberately chosen."

Correct, one cannot inherit another's sin. This is a common fallacy which existed during the time of Jesus; when blind men were thought to have sinful parents. The capacity for sin, or "original sin" is part of the human condition and is therefore inherited.

Sin as a corruption of the soul only exists when one sins; it is its own cause. Sin gets brough into the world when someone sins.

Let's begin with the basics of sin from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which explains the nature of sin.

Sin is an offense against God: "Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight." Sin sets itself against God's love for us and turns our hearts away from it.

Venial sin allows charity to subsist, even though it offends and wounds it.

Mortal sin destroys charity in the heart of man by a grave violation of God's law; it turns man away from God, who is his ultimate end and his beatitude, by preferring an inferior good to him.

For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: "Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent."

Now to your questions. The cause of sin must be the free decision of the sinner to do what he knows is wrong. It cannot be done by accident or without knowledge of what one is doing, or without knowledge that the action offends God. However, as creatures designed by God, we all have some knowledge of right and wrong.

We develop our consciences, including our knowledge of sin, by learning about God's revelation through God's prophets, holy scripture, and the teaching of the Church, the community Jesus authorized to safeguard his teachings and carry out his mission.

The tendency to sin may be inherited, but sin itself must be deliberately chosen.

    Cheers,

That's a loaded question. I'll do my best.

Sin entered the world when Adam and Eve chose to disobey God by eating the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil. They were naked, but until then didn't think a thing of it. They simply did not know evil, and thus had no capacity for it. But that changed when they ate the fruit. And we all inherited that capacity for evil.

In christianity we inherited sin from Adam & Eve who ate the forbidden Apple that's why we are capable of sin if it wasn't for them we would all be perfect. Other than that Sin can be anything you find wrong, some sins are blessings for some people and some blessings are sins for others it's all point of view, too bad God doesn't just show up and tell us all what's right & wrong, I think he's tried but human ignorance and greed has kept him away.

Yes, as the first answerer said, It simply doesnt exist!

I am aware of Angels and they tell me that it is the invention of MAN and RELIGION to keep people controlled by fear..

Religion teaches the opposite of what God is and does, for God simply Loves and Forgives endlessly..That*s why we were told by Jesus *Love One Another* and *Forgive those who persecute you*..

So why would God do the very opposite?..It is MAN and RELIGION who judge, threaten and condemn, NOT God..

God represents absolute Love, the OPPOSITE of fear, so why does the church teach fear, fear, fear and, more unhappily still, why do SO many people go along with that!

God gave us a brain and discernment to use during this life on Earth!..I*ll say no more!

The nature of sin is non-existent. Sin was invented as a means of control.
