Boy did you open a can of worms. There are more opinions on this than stars in the sky. Everyone knows the "secret" for growing the best toms, but a lot of it is none sense. I'm giving you the culture pages for the folks at Tomato Fest, now these folks know tomatoes!
Trust me, they are much easier than people seem to think.

I always plant mine in miracle gro potting soil, water 2-3 times a week, use miracle gro tomato fertilizer on them about once a week, and make sure they get full sun and you should be good to go
