Is binomial division used in real life?

My daugher was given a problem like how much is (X^3 - 2) (x - 1) where there was a remainer of -1 / (x-1). I don't think I've seen a case where I would have a remainder when dividing by a binomial in real life.

Have any of you?

Almost all divisions by a binomial would leave a remainder other than 0.

    For example, replace 2 with y in the numerator x^3 - 2 changing it to x^3 - y. For what values of y will (x^3 - y) divided by (x - 1) have a remainder of 0?

    x^3 - y = 1x^3 + 0x^2 + 0x^1 - y

Now, divide this by x - 1 using synthetic division:

    1 / ... 1 ... 0 ... 0 ... - y

    ............... 1 ... 1 .... 1

    ..........1 ... 1 ... 1 ... 1 - y

    Thus, the remainder is 1 - y.

This is equal to zero only when y = 1.

Note: Oftentimes in real life, we do not need exact values and are satisfied with approximate values. This may lead someone to discarding remainders.
