Question

I would have Buffon in goal, defenders-Rosato, Cannavaro, Baresi,& Maldidi{subs-Facchetti & Gentile}. In midfield-Mazzola, Rivera, & Conti{subs-Antognoni, Tardelli & Benetti}. Forwards-Rossi, Riva, & Roberto Baggio{subs-Bettega, Inzaghi, & Vieri} 

Some of my choices may surprise? But, as an example I picked Roberto Rosato because he shut down 2 deadly forwards at the 1970 finals. First Gerd Muller{ the best German forward ever} for 90 minutes of the semi-final until Rosato was oddly replaced with a raw player who then let Muller score 2. Then in the final Tostao was so frustrated that he could not get away from him that he shoved Rosato down. Facchetti & Gentile are my subs because they also could attack & yet had the speed to get back in defense.

I put Rivera with Mazzola out of balance. Rivera was all offense while Mazzola could help the defense when needed. Pele said that Conti was the mvp of the 82 finals because he could do everything well, that's good enough for me. If the defense was being hardpressed Benetti & Tardelli were tough & could also score, while Antognoni was a frailer but more creative version of Conti.

I salivated at the idea of the 3 forwards, all of whom gave defenders fits. Rossi could score with both feet & his head, while Riva & Baggio were deadly shooters. Riva was combative & Baggio downright mystical the way he could create goals out of air. The 3 forward subs are more laborer types{Inzaghi getting called offsides as an example} who would be good in case the others had run out of energy. I can't think of 2 hungrier for goal types than Inzaghi & Vieri, while Bettega had more total skill.

Whilst I will acknowledge Buffon is the best in the world, and has been so for some time, I still can't place him ahead of Dino Zoff. Although like Zoff, he played a crucial part in a World Cup triumph.

I have also forgotten about so many players from the past, small wonder, given the number of outstanding players the Azzurri have had, over the decades.
It's also hard not to include Claudio Gentile, after the heroics he performed in 1982 against a Maradona inspired Argentina and a Zico led Brazil. And what about Bergomi? A long serving and excellent defender. 

I have no quarrel with Rivera and Mazzola in midfield and I would consider Baggio as an attacking midfielder, rather than a forward. And certainly we can't ignore Signor Conti.

Luigi Riva has to be in it, but his partner is a conundrum. There have been so many great strikers. Historically Giuseppe Meazza would be in an all-time list, but I decided to only focus on players from 1970 onwards. So Paolo Rossi's amazing contributions in 1982, shades others.

In the end excepting Maldini, all my selected players were from the past, although Nesta, Cannavarro and Inzaghi, have the records to show as well.
