I'm sure it is the red and blue 3d format. See polarized 3d in theaters use two different light waves for the double images that everything has on the screen. One image has one light wave that goes to the left eye and the other image has a different light wave that goes to the right eye, and the lense will block one light wave but not the other. When they make televisions they don't make them to where half the pixels put out one light wave the the other half another. They all just put out one light wave. So they have to resort to the red and blue 3d format that only requires a color television to work.
Your only other option is a 3d format that looks just like polarized 3d but is uses shutter glasses that need power to open and close with images that flash on the screen in sync with the lenses. For this format you need a convertor box or a 3d television to use with the shutter glasses. I don't know of any dvd releases that use this format, right now only some video games are using it.

You have to use the glasses provided with the DVD. The polarised glasses will not work.
