I need some good air force bases?

My husband was just stationed in a place that will remain nameless, and we hate it here. We're supposed to be here for a little over 4 years.

So what we're planning is for him to go on a short tour for a year, then move me wherever we want to go. Because he told me that with short tours, the incentive is to go to pretty much any base you want, either your first or second pick.

Well, first we were just going to go back to California, but then he mentioned that he wants to take advantage of what the military can offer and travel the world. He wants me to find some nice air force bases all over the world we might be interested in, and I have NO CLUE where to start. What do you suggest and why?

Update:

A short tour is strictly voluntary. You can volunteer to go to one of these remote bases anytime. You just have to go change your paperwork and change your wishlist to those bases.

For "fun" places I heard these are the places to be:

    Minot AFB, ND

    Altus Air Force Base, OK

    Malmstrom Air Force Base, MT

    Wendover Air Force Range, Utah

    Maybe I'm wrong..I haven't been to a 'bad' AF Base, but there's a first.

Just playing, here are some other garden spots. I don't know if you want scenery or a better unit or both. I have hundreds of Airmen around me training and I asked a couple of them:

    Stateside:

Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA (been there myself, awesome)

    Eglin AFB, FL (Destin)

Randolph Air Force Base, TX (your in San Antonio)

MacDill Air Force Base, FL (Tampa Bay)

    Overseas (a few of many):

    Aviano Air Base, Italy

    Misawa Air Base, Japan

    Ramstein Air Base, Germany

    RAF Lakenheath, England

    Joint Force Command Brunssum, Netherlands

    Lajes Field, Portugal

My question is...he should know of at least most or all of these. What is he doing when he could be researching this stuff for you guys. Took me 5 minutes to find and I am NOT in the AF.

    Good luck and Above All!

Vandenberg AFB, Los Angeles AFB, Travis AFB USA: best weather in continental US though the first two are better than Travis. Travis is only a 40 minute drive from San Francisco. Two hours from Skiing at Tahoe.

Hickam AFB Hawaii: No explanation needed.

Yokota AB Japan: In greater Tokyo. So much to do in the developed world's largest city.

Ramstein AB Germany: No explanation really needed. See Europe from this central location.

Aviano AB Italy: At the foot of the Alps. Not far from Venice, Florence, Milan, or Switzerland.

    Good Luck!

Your husband is generally correct when he says he'll get his pick of bases if he does a short tour. Bear in mind that rule is not absolute. The gaining base has to have a slot for someone of his rank, AFSC, and skill level -- they won't do an overage just to accommodate him. However, 90% or better of airmen who do a short tour get their first pick.

I would strongly encourage you to do an overseas long tour as his follow-on assignment. There is no better way to see other countries than to live there. You can't possibly see all there is to see or get the real experience of a foreign country in a few weeks of vacation. It's not necessarily for everybody, but all my colleagues who have been on overseas long tours LOVED them.

If you're thinking about an overseas tour, I would recommend these bases, simply because the colleagues of mine that were stationed at these bases didn't want to leave:

    Ramstein AB Germany

    Spangdahlem AB Germany

    Aviano AB Italy

    Yokota AB Japan

Pretty much any base in the UK

I see one poster suggested Kadena AB Okinawa and Hickam AFB Hawaii -- the only reason I would caution you against either of these is the potential for getting "island fever." Also, living in Hawaii is VERY expensive and there is usually a very long waiting list for base housing on Hickam AFB. However, I have had colleagues stationed both places and they enjoyed them very much -- except for the island fever.

If you're thinking of CONUS bases, I would recommend these:

Patrick AFB Florida (right near Cape Canaveral)

    Eglin AFB (western Florida panhandle)

    Homestead AFB Florida (near Miami)

Keesler AFB Mississippi (near Biloxi, almost on the Gulf of Mexico)

Charleston AFB South Carolina (right outside Charleston)

Randolph AFB Texas (near San Antonio)

Langley AFB Virginia (Chesapeake Bay area)

Dover AFB Delaware (right outside Dover)

Peterson AFB Colorado (in Colorado Springs)

    Luke AFB Arizona (near Phoenix)

    Davis-Monthan AFB Arizona (near Tucson)

Nellis AFB Nevada (near Las Vegas)

    McChord AFB Washington (near Seattle/Tacoma)

Unless you're really into outdoor activities or don't mind being in the middle of nowhere, I would advise you AGAINST these bases:

    Mountain Home AFB Idaho

    Malmstrom AFB Montana

    F.E. Warren AFB Wyoming

    Minot AFB North Dakota

    Grand Forks AFB North Dakota

    Ellsworth AFB South Dakota

    Whiteman AFB Missouri

    Offutt AFB Nebraska

    Dyess AFB Texas

    Sheppard AFB Texas

    Goodfellow AFB Texas

    Laughlin AFB Texas

    Cannon AFB New Mexico

    Holloman AFB New Mexico

    Eielson AFB Alaska

    Good luck!

unless you are on Incirlik AB you really shouldnt complain :)

Peterson AFB is the nicest one i have ever been on. its in Colorado Springs. thats where we are hoping to be next. good luck.

EDIT: the girl above me is absolutely right, your husband just cant decide when he wants to go to a different base. if his orders say "4 years" you stay 4 years. sorry...thats how the military is!
