Why can't I pick up a signal from my netgear router since I moved?

Since I moved to a new city 2 years ago, I tried to hook up my netgear wireless router, but can't get the signal on my laptop. All the necessary lights are on, showing the connections are correct.

It used to work perfectly in my former home. I called Netgear for help, but they told me since it was no longer under guarantee, they could or would not help me, even with advice! Since both computers have been cleaned up and reformatted since then, I thought of trying again tonight, but I still get the same result - or non-result.

Any ideas?

Update:

Thanks all of you (or most of you - LOL) - seems like sound advice - nothing seems to work for me though. I guess my best bet is to through out the router and buy another one.

I'm sorry I'm not techie enough to pick a best answer, and as I haven't been able to make it work, can't pick the answer on that basis either. I may decide to pick the most detailed answer, I'll think about it until tomorrow.

push the reset button on the back of the router and hold it in for a few seconds. It should reset the router back to the factory settings.

After that, you'll have to set up your settings again.

To access the settings, you'll have to go to the web address 182.168.1.1

When it asks for the user name and password, it'll probably have to be 'admin', and the password is 'password'.

Check your wireless settings on your laptop to see if the old configs. are still there. If they are, delete them. Reset the router by putting a pen or other small point in the little hole in the back of the router and holding it there for 10 seconds. Reboot the laptop, then try searching for the wireless signal again. By resetting the router, the network should default back to being called Netgear.

Connect your laptop to your router using an ethernet cable. If the computer does not get to the internet Restart the computer.

Once you have connection using the ethernet cable, check for a wireless signal, verify that your wireless adapter is turned on. You should now see your router.

If still no wireless, setup a new wireless connection. For this you will need the SSID and encryption code. If you have not reset them they are printed on a tag on your router. If you've changed them, login to your router and get the codes. Enter these values into your new wireless connection.
