What's wrong with dog fighting?

If you feel it's wrong, help me understand you. I am NOT interested in seeing a dog fight or breeding dogs, (Heck , We have a Weimanweiner) But with Michael Vick getting out of jail, I have to ask. Mr. Vick owned those dogs, he didn't steal them, he did not have pit bulls fighting Chows. My beef is 2 fold: Michael Vick did with his money, time, and land what he wanted to do - no humans were hurt or threatened, no other people's lives or property were ruined or in jeopardy. And second, its some animals' instinct to fight - just like it's their instinct to breed. How can it be okay to neuter dogs but not okay to fight them?

I am hoping you can write something convincing if you feel strongly about this, I want to understand your point of view better.

Update:

Wow! Thanks! These are interesting answers. I guess I was hoping someone would address that dogs are property, and even if I think its cruel the way you treat your Chow -It's your Chow, you can dress it up or feed it bananas, or whatever you want - because it's yours.

Also - why is nuetering NOT considered cruel?

Yes, he spent his time, money, and land on something he wanted to do, too bad it was something that maybe wouldn't harm the people, but the dogs. Any dog owner should take into interest, how would you like it if your dog was in a dog fight and you knew your dog was going to get injured very badly, possibly die. He used these dogs as toys, as they weren't meant to be used. A dog is supposed to be a loving pet, one that you are supposed to create memories with, not a chew toy for other dogs.

Not only is the losing dog messed up, but the winning dog won't have a normal life with other dogs. Its first instinct would be to tear a dog to shreds because that is what was forced upon it. If the dog had been raised in the right family, the dog would be more likely to like other dogs than to tear them apart. Breeding is a different thing. Breeding can cause more dogs to become a part in this terrible act, and some owners don't want their dogs to have babies because they don't have the space and time for 10 more little dogs, but fighting, that is like having all of those puppies fighting, there is hurt and death involved in that.

    Why is dog fighting wrong?

Is that not obvious? Its cruel. They may be "just dogs" to some people but they are sentient animals capable of experiencing pain, fear, distress, etc.

Fighting causes all of the above - it causes a huge amount of unnecessary suffering to innocent creatures.

Then there is the "training" of fighting dogs - which usually means harsh physical abuse at the hands of the owner. This again causes suffering.

After the fight is also a concern - the dog may suffer as a result of its injuries, may be prone to infection, etc. Dogs that don't fight well, or get too old etc are killed, often barbarically.

In my opinion it is morally wrong to cause any sentient creature suffering for your own sick pleasure.

Dog fighting also poses a risk to others. What if those dogs got loose and killed a neighbours pet? That causes suffering to the victin animal, and to their owners. Human lives could also be at risk - many of these dogs are abused by people and there is a chance of them becoming human aggressive - if they got loose they could injure or kill someone.

    Why is neutering NOT cruel?

For a start neutering does not cause suffering. It is done by professionals, under anaesthetic, and the dogs should be given suitable post-op meds (eg pain relief).

Neutering is done for the benefit of dogs. It can prevent various health problems, can prevent or reduce behaviour problems (which may be a danger to people or other dogs, or simply result in the dog being dumped). It also prevents breeding and thus helps to reduce overpopulation - and the number of dogs being dumped, euthanased etc.

    As for instinct:

Breeding is instinctive due to hormones. Neutering stops the dogs instinct to breed - better the dog has no interest in breeding, than wants to and can't.

Fighting is also not an instinct (in this context). Yes dogs will fight for various reasons, but dogs are a social species and the behaviour of dogs used for fighting is not normal. These dogs have been selectively bred, raised and trained to fight. Any dog can become aggressive to other dogs if it has a bad experience, or simply is not socialised properly when young.

Even so - instinct is not necessarily "right". Some instinctive behaviours are dangerous and should be discouraged - not bet on!

One more thing - you said that no humans were hurt. Maybe not this time, or not yet. There is a link between animal abuse and abuse of humans. Most people convicted of violent crimes, child abuse, etc started out abusing animals. It makes sense really - if you get a kick out of seeing someone weaker than you suffer it doesn't matter if its a dog or a child. Animal abusers are simply a risk to society.

    Why Dog Fighting Is Good

  • 1 decade ago

um no you are totally not right about the pits Laurel I. The reason some pits are like that is because of poor breeding and atmospher. They are like humans. If there is a kid born and his parents are gang members and he grows up where there is violence every where the chances are that he will be violent when he gets older. The same principal with the dog if the pups parents are fighters and the pup is trained to be mean and is ill breed ( Cross bred or the parents were bred to much) than the pup will probly be a mean dog. I have had a pittbulls and she was the sweetest dog ever and right now she is liveing in harmony with a golden retriever and kids go near her and she is just fine. She actually adores kids. We have had to have labs which are know as great kids dogs uethenized because they tried to bite children we also had a border collie who actually tried to bite an 7 year old in the face and bit an adult and drew blood. Any dogs can be nasty if they are ill bred and not raised in the right envirement. I know pitbulls do not have the best record but it is caused from people being iresponsible with their pets and breeding them.

Its cruel to the animal. they rarely are given medical treatment, they are often forced to fight, look up "bait dogs", the animals used to train the fighting dogs are often stolen

neutering is not considered cruel because allowing animals to breed unwanted litters promotes dog fighting, hoarding, and animals being euthanized. Neutering is a simple procedure that actually allows an animal to lead a better life, they have less chances of getting reproductive cancer, urinary infections, and they will not bolt from a home. Dogs that are not neutered will have the constant need to breed, they will run from a home, where they will find an unfixed dog, breed, possible get hit by a car or picked up by animal control, and if the owner does not find the dog within one week (most shelters it is less), the animal will be euthanized.

Neutering also helps reduce aggression in animals, this means if your dog was to get loose and feel threatened it would not attack a human or an other animal (and it has happened before), the resulting animal would have to be destroyed.

Maybe you should do research into dog fighting, if you think its okay, because the animal is "property",that's wrong, african americans were once thought of as property, people thought it was okay to beat them, rape, enslave them, just because they were property didn't make it right, they were living things, they had feelings just like dogs have feelings.

Oh, an many people find it cruel to dress dogs up...

I belive that dog fighting is unetical beceause it may be your time, money, and land but the dogs are abused and made to fight so if the humane socioty steps in all the dogs are dead beceause they can never be adopted and dogs should be nutered unless you have a breeders licence beceause if cats, dogs, or what ever pet you have is not nudered it will breed alot and then you will have a thousand puppies running around so in that sense it is not cruel or harmful and dog fighting technicaly is destruction of property beceause you are killing dogs that you own or someone else owns.

Are you serious? No dog WANTS to fight - it's not 'in their nature' - it was bred there and forced there by humans.

Michael Vick is an idiot and I wouldn't put too much stock in his lifestyle - no, no humans were hurt, but that's not the point, is it? It's not called 'dog fighting' for no reason. Dogs were hurt. Lots of dogs. And all for the sick, twisted fun of the humans.

I honestly can't believe you want us to convince you that dog fighting is wrong, but here you go:

its so incredibly violent. to throw a dog into a pit with no other option but defend itself or die.... its cruel. did you ever watch that movie 'gladiator'? think of that scene where the prisoners were forced into the forum to fight these huge other people. don't you think they would rather have been home getting loved by their family or hanging out at the local pub, anything but getting annihilated. without anesthesia i might add.

The problem is that these dogs often don't have the instinct to fight. They are often times beat untill they will fight just to survive. If the dogs loose they are then executed in ways that are just as cruel as forcing them to fight. One of my dogs is a rescue who was originaly in training for dog fighting. He dosen't have it in him to fight another dog yet his owner would beat him till he fought out of fear and confusion.

Many people love the idea of owning a dog but one thing that they have to keep in mind often times, is that the dog needs to be trained. Learn here http://onlinedogtraining.enle.info/?Qs36

While the pet may look heart-breakingly cute when it's in a shelter or at the pound, picking out the dog is only the first part of the relationship between dog owner and the animal. Many people don't understand that they have to put time and effort into socializing the dog.

An unsocialized dog will intimidate others, tear up the home, and will create an environment that can become so bad that the it will have to be returned. Many times when dogs have to be returned to shelters or to other resources, it will end up euthanized, which is very heartbreaking. All of this can be spared if a person learns the various techniques in order to socialize the dog.

One thing that they have to understand is that the he wants to be told what to do. It's in the canine nature to follow a leader. The dog will be more than willing to obey the leadership of its master. Here's a look at some common techniques that are used in dog training:

    "Dog Whispering"

This is a technique that has been around for a while, but gained national notoriety over the last 10 years. Some people might hear this term and wonder how in the world whispering to a dog can train it! Whispering isn't meant to be taken literally in this case. As trainers have shown, whispering is a term that refers to connecting with a being or an entity on a very deep and almost spiritual level. When it comes to dog training techniques, dog whispering involves careful observation of the dog's behavior and actions.

It literally entails getting inside the mind and the behavior system of the canine. When a person uses dog whispering techniques, they interact with the dog on the canine level. Again, one the most common mistakes that people make is treating the dog like a small human being.

    "Reward Training"

Reward training is very simple and it's one of the older tricks that works. This is a simple method of training the dog by positive reinforcement. Once he does what it is told to do, it receives a treat. How this works is that the dog owner must entice the dog towards the treat. Once the canine develops awareness for the treat, it develops a strong desire for it. When the desire for it is extremely strong, the dog owner pulls back. Then the dog receives a command and when the dog obeys the command, it receives the treat. The object is to make the dog associate a treat with the command.

    "Clicker Training"

Other dog training techniques include one that is similar to reward training, which is called clicker training. How this works is that the clicker is incorporated to get the dog's attention. The clicker is clicked as a form of communication with the dog. It learns that there is a command or reward associated in conjunction with the clicker. Many people claim that this is fun, and they actually make a game with the dog by using the clicker for their dog training tasks.

    "Ultrasonic Whistle"

Last, a relatively new form of dog training technique is called the ultrasonic whistle. This works because the ultrasonic sound is only heard by the dog. When the owner is trying to communicate a command, or stop the dog from barking, they will blow on their whistle when they want to communicate a command to the dog. The benefit of this is that the humans can't hear this noise, but the dog can hear it, and they will learn to associate the sound with a command.

Dog training techniques aren't hard to incorporate, but they are something that absolutely must be incorporated from the time a dog owner brings their new dog home. No matter how old or how young the dog is, they will need training. Once they are trained properly, they will be a wonderful addition to one's family.
