What is a good way to listen to the music on my computer throughout the house?

I have thousands of songs on my computer. While I could make CDs or hook up my IPOD, I'd rather be able to just listen to my I-tunes on my computer in different rooms in my house.

Ideally I'd like speakers in the kitchen, living room, dining room and back porch.

What is a decent system for that which wouldn't cost a fortune and could be hooked up fairly easily.

I also would want to be able to control the volume in each room separately, and ideally not have to get a step ladder to turn a knob on a speaker.

Thanks for the tips

my sisters lives in new york city on the upper east side and she has speakers all over her apartment...she has a remote thing that controls everything in every room, but i don't know what it's called.she said she payed a couple of thousands...the only thing that i would suggest is to buy a sterio system or just buy a ipod sterio dock for every room...if you want speaks all over the house just like my sisters has then thats gonna cost you alot of money...my sister hired someone to do that...
