Libertarian conservative with no ties to any particular party. I vote for whoever makes the most sense, regardless of party. I've been called a "right wing loon" on here, but that guy was just a misinformed Socialist. I'm not on here to make friends, win popularity contests or just rack up points. I just call it like I see it without a lot of candy coating. I do have a pet peeve about bad grammar. My answers are insightful, opinionated, and usually based in personal knowledge and/or experience. I pride myself on giving good answers, and with a best answer rate of around 45%, I think my answers speak for themselves. I do tend to address other answerers if they make incorrect assertions, have really bad grammar or are just out and out wrong in their views. • Microsoft Word - all files corrupted?

I came in to work day before yesterday and noted that virtually all files in Microsoft Word would not open, giving me a corrupted file error message. I can, however, create new files that seem to be fine.

I am on a Dell PC running XP.

I have tried the following steps without success:

    1. System Restore (could not be restored)

    2. System Restore in safe mode

    3. re-installed Microsoft Office

    4. ran various spyware and virus programs

    5. tried repairing the files from both within Word and with a couple of free programs designed to fix corrupted word files (both programs crashed when trying to repair).

Everything else about my computer seems to work normally.

We use the program Dropbox to allow files to be shared among us who work here, so I tried opening some files at home and also downloading some files from Dropbox.com and they were corrupted too.

Any ideas beyond just starting over?

    Thanks

  • Is there any place in Atlanta for either Mexican breakfast or breakfast tacos?

Just moved here from Texas where most Mexican restaurants are open for breakfast and almost every restaurant serves breakfast tacos.

Now, I fully acknowledge that what I'm looking for is an Americanized version of Mexican food.

Just curious if there are any places in the Atlanta area offering anything like that? I am in Duluth, so anything in Gwinnette or Fulton counties would be awesome.

    Thanks

  • I have a removeable hard drive that doesn't come up on the device list. How can I access its files?

I have a removeable hard drive and hooked it up to my laptop. After a few messages it said your device is now ready for use. However, under the My Computer icon, under the section for removeable devices, it does not show up. If I go to device manager, I do see it listed and it shows to be working normally.

Is there a way I can access the files on there?

    This is PC.

    Thanks

  • How Can I Open a Filemaker 7 file in FM 5?

I used to have a Mac (until it died). I had some files on their I created with FM 7. On my PC laptop, I have FM 5. I have the Mac files on my PC, but because the version I have of FM is older, it won't open them, and the FM disc I had for my Mac is Mac only.

Any way I can convert those files so I can access the info?

Since I have already bought FM twice, I don't want to shell out more $$ to buy it a 3rd time.

    Thanks

  • How Do I fix a wall outlet that has low power (but does have power)?

I have a wall outlet I thought was dead since nothing I plugged into it worked. However with a tester I bought, it does light up, just very faintly compared to every other outlet in the house. There are other outlets that work fine on the same breaker and I replaced the outlet with one I know to be good and it didn't change anything.

Any idea how to fix this?

    Thanks

  • What would be a fun family vacation this summer (starting in Dallas) for around $1,000 for a family of 4?

We want to take a family vacation this summer but don't have a lot of $$.

2 kids under age 4 and we live in Dallas.

Any vacation ideas for around $1,000?

The Texas coast would probably be a given if it weren't for the oil spill.

  • Anyone know of a place in Plano Texas where you can go in and rent a Mac by the minute?

Kinkos used to offer Macs but with their merger with Fedex they nixed the Macs in all locations.

I just need to do a little work on a Mac in the Plano, TX area and can't seem to find much Googling.

    Anyone know of a place?

  • Any way to pull files off an external hard drive to a PC originally formatted for Mac?

I have an external hard drive on my Mac at home and the Mac recently bit the dust. I use a PC laptop at work and hoped I could just connect the USB external drive and pull files off of it.

My laptop recognized the drive and says it's working normally but I can't get the icon to come up to actually access it.

Going under disc management I see the external drive does not have a drive letter assigned to it, but the option to add one is grayed out.

Any way to do what I'm wanting to do without reformatting it and losing what's on it?

    Thanks

  • Should I be upset my wife wants to go to her High School Reunion alone?

My wife has talked about her high school reunion for over a year, and was excited about going back and introducing me to her old friends. However, earlier in this year she said she had changed her mind about going (we live a long way from her hometown).

She cited the cost of travel, which with times being a little tight, I understood, though we could certainly have made it work.

Now however, just a few weeks before the event, she tells me that it would mean a lot if she could actually go, but now she made it clear that she wants to go alone (just by her statements like "I could just stay with my brother so I wouldn't have to spend money on a hotel").

Since we would be flying via frequent flier miles, its not really a decision she made because of money; a cheap rental car and staying with her brother would make our actual expenses pretty low.

Am I wrong to feel slighted by her no longer wanting to include me?

Honestly since I don't know anyone there, I'm fairly indifferent to the actual event, but I've never voiced that, so its hard not to feel hurt or even suspicious.

I am hesitant to bring it up to her because I don't want her to invite me out of pity or because she feels sorry for me, and I wouldn't go if I felt like that was the only reason she was asking.

Am I just being over-sensitive or do I have a right to feel that way?

How would you bring it up?

  • What is a good way to listen to the music on my computer throughout the house?

I have thousands of songs on my computer. While I could make CDs or hook up my IPOD, I'd rather be able to just listen to my I-tunes on my computer in different rooms in my house.

Ideally I'd like speakers in the kitchen, living room, dining room and back porch.

What is a decent system for that which wouldn't cost a fortune and could be hooked up fairly easily.

I also would want to be able to control the volume in each room separately, and ideally not have to get a step ladder to turn a knob on a speaker.

    Thanks for the tips

  • What's the cheapest way to get Microsoft Word?

I bought my wife a laptop and she needs Microsoft Word. She doesn't care about Excel and Powerpoint, but buying the "office" package seems to be the cheapest route to go with Microsoft. It just doesn't seem right paying $150 for a typing program.

The laptop doesn't have a CD ROm drive, so ideally I'd like to download a copy of word somewhere and not pay a fortune.

    Any recommendations?

  • Is there a way to easily move files and folders from Outlook Express to Office Outlook?

A co-worker was using Outlook Express, but wanted the features of Office Outlook and I convinced him to switch over. However, he has a lot of folders and files (emails) within those folders.

Is there a way he can easily move those folders and files over without having to create new folders and email all the files to himself?

    Thanks

  • What Laptop Should I Buy for My Wife?

With 2 young daughters (under age 2), my wife gets very little time for herself, especially on our desktop. I would like to get her a laptop that she can take into any room of the house and use when she gets the chance.

She would mainly use it to check email, do internet comparison shopping and write in Microsoft Word. It doesn't need a huge memory or high end graphics or audio as we can do that on our desktop.

I don't want to spend a fortune, but I do want something quick, reliable, durable and that will be easy for her to carry around the house.

My work laptop is a Dell which I like OK and our home desktop is a Mac which I like OK.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

  • Why won’t my email server allow emails to be sent to sbcglobal addresses?

At my work, I often email customers, and occasionally I get email addresses from sbcglobal.net

Anytime I email addresses from sbc, the emails never go through. I am usually just sending text, so it’s not an issue of attached files or large size emails.

I have also tested it with my wife, who has sbcglobal, and it is definitely not going through, even to a bulk/spam folder.

I can receive emails from these addresses, but I cannot send directly or even reply to emails I receive from them.

I don’t seem to have this issue with any other email servers.

    Any ideas on a solution?

  • How Does a Home Loan Modification affect your credit score?

I am considering a home loan modification to reduce my interest rate (and thus my payment), but I was told by the mortgage company it has a negative affect on one's credit score, but they couldn't give me details.

I don't want to refinance as I probably won't remain in the house long enough to cover the closing costs.

My interest rate, while fixed, is high (7.5%). My credit score is good (740)

For anyone who has done this or is in the industry; any information is appreciated.

I am not behind at all on my payments, and not likely to be. I just feel 7.5% is way too high in today's environment and I think I'm paying too much but don't want the expense of a refi.

I posted this once before and only got 1 answer, so I'd like to get at least a couple of perspectives.

    Thanks

  • Why is my built-in dishwasher not draining?

I just installed a new sink disposal and ever since my dishwasher is not draining.

There was a hose coming from the dishwasher to the disposal, and I connected it to the new disposal in exactly the same manner as the old one was, using the very same hose and clamp.

The new disposal was basically the same make and model as the old one.

The disposal works fine, and the dishwasher goes through it's normal cycle, it's just not draining.

I have to believe the two are connected since they happened simultaneously, but I can't figure out what needs to change. I checked the bottom of the dishwasher and don't see anything blocking anything.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!
