Any way to pull files off an external hard drive to a PC originally formatted for Mac?

I have an external hard drive on my Mac at home and the Mac recently bit the dust. I use a PC laptop at work and hoped I could just connect the USB external drive and pull files off of it.

My laptop recognized the drive and says it's working normally but I can't get the icon to come up to actually access it.

Going under disc management I see the external drive does not have a drive letter assigned to it, but the option to add one is grayed out.

Any way to do what I'm wanting to do without reformatting it and losing what's on it?

Thanks

Update:

yes, I've restarted multiple times and tried it on 2 different PCs.

did you try to restart windows explorer?

sometimes, drives/flash data cards arent recognized immediately and you can just restart windows explorer from the task manager
