Prime ministers are appointed by their party, a President is popularly elected. The Prime minister and president both have to rely on the legislative system to make laws, but the president has right of veto.

president is head of state AND head of government

    Prime Minister:

In a parliamentary system, you vote for a party. The parties then form coalitions and compromises until there is one group that has a majority and agrees to elect someone as the Prime Minister. Typically, this person is the leader of the party with the most votes, but if the vote is close enough and enough parties agree to oppose this, several different large minority parties can form a coalition to create a different majority and elect someone else as the Prime Minster.

    President:

The President is elected by the people, not the party. This election can be direct or indirect, but the votes are still for the individual. The President is free to change party affiliations or to have no party at all (which hasn't happened in the US since our first President George Washington).

Either way, the President and the Prime Minister do essentially the same job. They are the chief executives and make appropriate appointments to form a government according to their policies. The language of "forming a government" is a parliamentary system thing, but essentially that part is the same either way.

Note that this is a general answer about the differences between presidential systems and parliamentary systems. Some nations use the terms differently. Some have both a president and a prime minister and those nations vary in how power is balanced among them. Russia is an interesting case in point. Putin was their president and he had control of the whole nation. He served his maximum 2 terms and then became Prime Minister. Now Prime Minister Putin has control of the nation and the president is just his puppet.

A prime Minister is generally considered the leader of a palimentry form government's cabinet. Usually a cabinet consists of of ministers like minister of deffence, commerce, economy, ect. And the Prime Minister is the head of that cabinet. President on the other hand is technically the CEO of a country and head of the executive branch. However, esentially the 2 are the same thing. Although it depends on the form of government. In Russia the president and Prime Minister both have a lot of power, but in Israel the President is mostly cerimonial. Prime Ministers are usually considered the head of government and handle the daily tasks of the government. Prime Minister, Chancellor, or Priemre are all essentially the same thing.

In India the President is elected by electoral collage and the Prime Minister is appointed by the ruling Party (combine). The President has to carry out the orders of the Prime Minister and the Prime Minister has to carry out the orders of the Ruling Party's chair person.

In India, the Prime Minister is much more like a KING than the President. Unlike US, where the President is nearly all-in-all.
