There are multiple NATO approved rounds. 5.56 (.223) and 7.62 are among those.

Member nations carry the firearms their individual countries have adopted. Most currently use the AK-47 in 7.62 x 39. Another popular one is the M-16 in 5.56 Nato.

outline a "new twenty first Century rilfe"? the user-friendly technologies of the computerized rifle has no longer replaced considerably in over 50 years. there's no longer something incredibly "new" available in any respect. *****EDIT**** so which you think of bullpups are "twenty first century"? You do be attentive to that the British military just about accompanied a bullpup layout in the early 1950's do no longer you? And the Austrian military has had a bullpup because of the fact the 1970's. it is not a sparkling layout philosophy. in simple terms having the mag on the incorrect end of the gun does not make a gun cutting-component. there have been and nevertheless are many motives to reject the bullpup concept and many armies do reject it.

If you own a civilian AR-15 and you call it an assault rifle then you can dislike that. But a fully capable M-16 that fully auto and meant to kill then is called an assault riffle because your not going to tickle them with it.

The United Nations has no military force. It "borrows" them from its members, who use whatever their individual country uses.

I'm pretty sure every country has their own favorite. However, there is a trend of the western ones using 5.56X45mm (.223 is the civilian version of the bullet; they are not interchangeable) and the eastern ones using 7.62X39mm. It's all just echoes of the cold war.
