How to keep your dog from running?

My Dog is a chocolate lab mix a girl and fixed with a large back yard for running. But will and does Escape runs will not come back. she'll even sit on front steps but if you open up door she bolts. If you try to catch she runs like it's a game. I'm so surprised she hasn't been hit yet.(busy road) For a while hubby had to chase her with van not working any more took us over an hour to get her back. What can we do hubby afraid if we took her out of town to run she'd never come back. Have 4 kids that would be lost with out her. before I forget she's 8-9 years old help please I'm at my wits end.......

How about obedience classes. It is never too late to train your dog, to teach her come. Also, perhaps you need to install a fence or improve the one you have.http://www.coyoteroller.com/

Mostly, I think you need to teach her come. Always have a treat in you hand, and offer it to her while saying come. Use it to lure her inside, but you do need to praise her and give her the treat, or she will just keep running.

I think you have answered your own question there. It has become a game which is rewarded with lots of attention.

The first thing I would do is work on her recall within the house. Praise and give her treats every time she responds and comes when you call her. Always use the same command word, preferably not her name, because that has too many other associations for her.

Remember never to use an angry tone of voice when she does not come back the first time and never punish her when she finally is caught. This just makes her much more likely to run away from you next time.

The only solution to the back yard problem is higher fences.

Your dog needs obedience training. You should teach her the "wait" command. Have her learn how to wait to go through all doors until you give her the OK to do so. You can start teaching her this by putting her on a leash, opening the gate and making her sit and wait for you to go through the gate by using the command WAIT, and then giving her the ok to come through using the word OK. Treats always help, and don't scold her if she messes up. Be patient, and try again. Reward her when she does what you ask.

In addition, work on recalling her. You can do this by tying a long clothesline to her collar, and calling her name with the come command. If she does not come, reel her in and reward with a treat when she gets to you. You can do this outside of your fenced yard so that she knows you want her to come to you when you call no matter where she is, and she will probably pick it up rather quickly. Chasing a dog NEVER works, as it is just fun and games. After all, if someone was chasing you, would you stop and come to them??

Or you could always go to obedience classes :)

I have a dog like that and while he still runs, I've worked on a method.

First of all, stay 100% calm and don't chase. I got a whistle and I would shake a bag of treats while saying "Smokey COME!" and he'll come sprinting towards me everytime. For training purposes, I make him sit in arm's reach of me (or closer), I'll tell him "Stay" and I'll grab his scruff. If he sits like a good boy, he gets a treat, then we repeat, and repeat, and repeat, and repeat... The reason I make him sit, stay, and grab him is because I want him to be used to me going to grab him so he doesn't think it's a game. It's worked really well. The last time he ran out of the house, he went down the street a little bit and just started rolling in our neighbor's yard like a silly pup until my husband grabbed him. Normally he'd be bolting back and forth across the road and just going insane!

    3 words " train your dog "

it's simple here is what you do

step 1. first keep your dog on a leash, and run around with her and if she runs of too far yank it back

step 2. next let it lose a little put a bone somewhere and keep her leash on, but make sure the bone is on the property, but hold onto the leash

step 3. let it even more lose keep her leash on, but let go of it place a bone somewhere, and let her find it, and bring it back to you if she runs off just chase her or get a shock collar.

step 4. at last take her leash off and run with her in your yard, and when it's time to stop say " heel , follow me " if that doesn't work grab her collar KEEP HER COLLAR ON AT ALL TIMES. " that was a note you should remember i'm not screaming "

step 5. try to let her run on her own if she runs off start from square one

At last she will probably be able to keep her from running

    Hope that helps!

Why didn't you train her? I've never had a dog that I had to chase. It's your fault, and it is just a matter of time before she becomes another dead dog on the road. You NEVER chase a dog, you run the other way.
