Do you think todays music is getting better or worse?

I just can't compared today's rock bands/ music to the 80s. My parents tell me that today's music is better but from the way I see it, it's mostly computer effects.

Katy perry is a good example, she has a good voice in the recording studio but when she sings live, shes horrible.

Bon Jovi who is an 80s rock band could sing very well live. I just think today's music is going downhill and people don't really realise it.

I also can't stand Rap music which has become quite popular in todays music.

Can you please tell me what you think about it?

I do agree that in the past there were some great musicians and they created some phenominal music, but I would not say that music today is worse, just diffirent. I do say that there are some horrindously bad bands today, but there were plenty of those in the past as well we just don't hear of them because they couldn't pass the test of time. Just look at the music of the 80's the music then got plenty of bad press, but does everyone forget about AC/DC, Metallica, Scorpions, Foreigner. They all had huge hits from the 80's and I don't know of anyone that can't find at least 1 song everyone likes of those bands. I'm just saying that there are plenty of bands out there putting out great music just take a chance and really listen in and find out what the songs are saying and where the artist is coming from. I'd say it isn't neccessarily all bad or all good its just different

I'm finding a little more challenging to hear things that excite me, or even intrigue me, but I've listened to so much for so long that it's a rare and beautiful to hear something that's really good AND really different.

It's not really the music's fault - it's mine for living too long.

There was a time where you could trace the evolution of music in a genre, you know the Beatles listened to Little Richard, Elvis listened to Gospel, Led Zeppelin listened to blues (especially Willie Dixon who they flagrantly aped) New Order and The Smiths were inspired by the Sex Pistols etc. But then the music that influenced them was new and otherworldly and contrasted sharply with what they were used to, and they created something new blending it with their own musical traditions.

Nowadays everyone is exposed to everything - I'm still not sure if that means ever more spiraling changes and genre busting - or just that murky brown you get when you mix all the colours of the rainbow together in a paint tin.

I think it depends on what music style you like. personally, I can't stand the guitars of the 80s and found the 90s to be quite pointless, popcorn rock. I'm a huge fan of Indie music and now, more than ever, with the proliferation of music blogs and self promotion going on across the internet, indie music is getting out to the people at a grassroots level.

Bands/artists like Sufjan Stevens and Citizen Cope who write and produce most of their own music are amazing. Mates of State, The Subways, Modest Mouse, Josh Pyke, Imogen Heap, Fat Freddy's Drop, MIA and Joseph Arthur are all amazing artists.

However, because it is so much easier for people to create and make public their own music now, there is also MORE music out there so it is harder to separate the crap from the great.

So my answer - I like music of today, although music back in the 70s comes a close second!

Music has certainly been getting worse. I'm a big Indie fan, something I used to be proud to say, but now when I say I like Inide, people ask if I like Vampire Weekend or Artic Monkeys!? these are not indie bands, The Smiths are an amazing example of perfect Indie music, Libertines too. None of todays modern music will stand up too any Beatles song.

    worse , way way worse.

To start with far too much music is about the singer.

What they like, how they roll, why they are so cool or sexy or in love of dumping you.

In the past songs seemed to be more about a topic or subject. lIke love, or trains or something and it was aimed at the public, about the public. For instance i wil make up an example.

A song written 40 years ago might be called "broken hearts"

Now if it was relaesed it would be "my broken heart"

Im just sick of lyrics about the singer.Who cares, if they did't buy the song off a record company and record it someone else would have anyway.

It depends on the artist or the band. I can't stand rap myself, and I feel some music is pure rubbish with no meaning. Some singers are also criminals. However, others like the Backstreet Boys, David Archuleta and others are a breath of fresh air in the English Music Industry.

PS: I like slow, pop songs.

    It's terrible.

99.9% of all the artists on CDs have been using auto-tune. Auto-tune is a device used to adjust the pitch of the singer's voice in real-time, giving listeners a false sense of good singing.

T-Pain uses auto-tune liberally, the latest High School Musical movie uses it in the soundtrack.

Unfortunately, lots of the pop/rap music these days has a steady 1-3 beat, where the bass hits on 1 and the snare on 3. Classical music, proven to actually boost intellect, typically never has a real beat, so it keeps the listener's attention better.

give rap a try, i used to have opinions on it but now i love it, i think there is always good and bad music artists no matter what the time, we just don't hear about the rubbish 80's and 70's bands because they are forgotten, people like eminem, t-pain ect.. and rock groups of today will go down in history, where as some will just be forgotten, so it will seem like this generation had good music too if that makes sense

I agree today's music it is bad it's computerized or it lacks real content where there no message in the music anymore.

It's all about remixes and cramming artist on one song and making the orginal sound horrible not in all cases of course but in most.

Rap music use to be about sneaker and food and having fun now it's about money cars girls and sex and cuss words

Im only 18 and i kinda agree with you. Chavvy music such as 'baseline' is a load of cr*p. I'd much rather prefer something older. Saying that though i do like a lot of today's music too even though some of it is computerised and stuff.
