Puppies online??????????????????

I'm wondering why people can assume ALL puppies purchased online are from BYB's or puppy mills? The finest dogs from long lines of champions all have web sites and if you are lucky are willing to sell the puppies to you. I believe a BYB or puppy mill is something quite different. A BYB does not breed for the betterment of the breed but for other reasons such as money or "won't it be cute". They do not do the testing of their dogs nor the showing of their dogs before they put the litter into the process of breeding. Puppy mills usually breed more than 1 type of breed and do not specialize in them and do not do the testing or showing that would improve the breeds they 'raise'. From my experience, the best dogs that are champions all have web sites and 'sometimes' they allow their puppies to be purchased. The great breeders spend lots of time showing off their dogs and what they have accomplished.

Update:

Yes, you are right they do not sell the puppies to just anyone by putting in a credit card number but they will speak to you about selling their puppies. I guess I forgot how many people will just sell to anyone so I didnt add that to my question.

Reputable breeders do not directly list and sell their puppies from their website. They also dont use sites like puppyfind and epups

Reputable breeders have websites.. but they use their sites to display their adults, for show brags, pedigrees, information about the breed in general, etc.. they do not have their "available" pups listed with pay pal signs next to them.

My breeder had SOME Of her pups listed on her site, but did not have "available" listed on them.. she mostly displayed her show prospects, and had the new owners listed under their pics. In order to get information about purchasing a pup, I had to call or email her.. only after a few conversations did I get information about how to send her the money for a deposit.

Puppy Mills and BYBs allow their pups to be purchased online like a peice of merchandise.. you wont find a pay pal or credit card button on a reputable breeder's site.

Yes, even good, responsible breeders often have websites. I think where people go wrong is in purchasing a pup because the website looks good and the "breeder" says the pup is healthy because they've been vet checked. Many, probably most, puppy buyers unfortunately do not know the difference between a vet check for general health and health testing for genetic problems and diseases.

The first place any puppy buyer should visit on the net is the National Breed Club for the breed/s they are interested in. That way they can get a list of breeders that adhere to a code of ethics as well as accurate breed information and, if interested in rescue, a listing of responsible rescue persons/groups for the breed.

The second thing, once breed choice is narrowed down to one, two or three possibles, is to visit a few dog shows in their area or visit a few breeders found in #1 even if this means doing a bit of traveling to do so.

Third, along with number two, check out the websites for the breeders found in number one, talked to/visited in number two. But do not decide on a puppy purchase based on any website. Ideally you should visit the chosen breeder at least a few times before getting a puppy and pick the puppy up yourself but, with some of the the rarer breeds, this is not always possible.

Because you don't purchase puppies from those reputable breeders' websites online. You might get some information about their breeding program, look at photos of their adult dogs and past puppies, but you don't buy a puppy from them online. You contact them, talk to them extensively, visit them in person (reputable breeders won't sell to someone they haven't met in person), and get put on a waiting list. They do not post puppies 'for sale' on their sites- they are sold before the litter is even conceived.

While the web can be a tool to locate a good breeder and learn about their program, any puppy actually bought online & shipped is from a puppy mill or backyard breeder because good breeders don't sell to people they haven't met and don't ship except to people they know very well.

  • You are correct, most reputable breeders have their own web sites and announce when they have puppies However, when people say "do not buy online" they are usually referring to the masses of random web listings, where anyone can advertise a dog and where most of these BYB's advertise their ill-bred puppies.

You will also find some reputable, show breeders on these sites also occasionally, but for the first time puppy buyer it is VERY hard to distinguish the reputable from the BYB, especially the BYB's usually post flowery adverts to attract buyers, unlike the ethical breeder who is more cuatious in their adverts and posts facts of health screening etcetera.

The BYB's and puppy mills by far exceed the number of ethical breeders who use random web listing sites.

ADDED: Plus as DeeDawg says, you cannot actual purchase puppies ONLINE from an ethical breeder, only make contact with them. I forgot that bit DD!!

There is a really big difference between www.buyapuppyonline.com (made up website) and a reputable AKC registered breeder with a web site. I found my breeder through the internet. I contacted her to ask about a puppy and the first thing I got was a huge e-mail telling me why I didn't want that specific breed. She insisted on me visiting to meet both parents, she wanted vet references and to know my experience. We spent three hours on the phone so she could get a feel for me and she let me know after about two weeks that I passed and was approved to be a home for one of her puppies.

When you go to www.buyapuppy.com and you say "I want this puppy" and the person says "okay, here you go" that is a BYB/puppy mill and you shouldn't buy from them. Any breeder that does not insist on approving you is not a breeder you should be buying from. Any moron with two intact dogs can produce puppies and do with alarming frequency. Doesn't mean you should buy from them.

The difference between legitimate breeders and websites that advertise puppies (puppy mill and BYB sites) is legitimate breeders generally do not advertise on breeder sites such as puppydogweb or puppyfind, want people to see their puppies and premises before adopting, screen owners carefully before agreeing to a purchase, and have decent guarantees (several years minimum). They have very few litters per year and there are often waiting lists. For this reason, they don't advertise their websites, you have to seek them out through referral or through the breed club. They don't come looking for you.

If a breeder has a web site that's fine. It doesn't make them a "bad" breeder. It's when they are more then willing to ship a puppy to someone they don't know, they don't know what experience they have with this breed, wont let people meet the parents, etc.

People have to go to the breeders house and meet the parents!

That is the ONLY way to know for sure if your supporting bad breeding practices.

Bad breeders put on a nice front, they have cute puppies on web sites and great stories about the parents, bloodlines, etc.

I wonder how many people know that the parents are probably living their entire lives in a wire Rabbit hutch?!

DeeDawg is absolutely right. Plenty of good breeders have websites showcasing their dogs and what they do with their dogs.

But if you can pick a puppy off a website, pay for it with your credit card, and have it shipped without ever meeting the breeder or seeing their facilities, you're not buying from a responsible source.

    Thus, the assumption.

great breeders don't sell their dogs online. they may have a website so people can look at the pictures, but they dont' SELL them. you can't enter your credit card info and BAM! have a pup shipped to you.

REAL breeders don't work like that.

exactly. so ALL pups who are PURCHASED online ARE from puppy mills.

pups who are LOOKED AT online could be from either.
