What is the difference between analysis of a story and summary of a story?
I have to write the summary AND analysis of Diary Of Anne Frank for English Project. Only problem, i used to think that analysis and summary is the same. Can anyone help?
I don't need information on the book, I just need to know the difference between the two.
Thank you, I will also give points for best answer willingly.

Analysis is sorting out the Good-over-Worse....It doesn't mean that it must contain only the Good things about the Story. Analysis is showing the positive & negative sides of the story in your way....It may include your own opinions regarding the story. On the other hand, the summary will not allow you to add your own point-of-views regarding the story. It(summary) should only contain the small history of the whole story. The user should get an complete idea by reading the summary. Summary is nothing more than picking out the important things from the story. In short, Analysis is you own point-of-views towards the story & Summary is the briefing the story.

The instructions seem pretty straightforward, but I'll try to break it down for you a little. 1. Divide your novel into 3 sections. Shouldn't be too hard; just o with the first 1/3 of the novel, the next 1/3, and the last 1/3. 2. For each of these 3 sections, you need to write a reading response. I guess number 2 is where it gets a little tricky for you. The instructions say you should do an analysis, not a summary. Basically, the difference is that a plot summary is simply a brief retelling of the events that happened in the story. An analysis, on the other hand, goes beyond that. The instructions actually include pretty clear and specific ways you could do that: "Comment on aspects such as events, setting, characters, and conflicts...write about your reactions, observations, insights, personal connections, feelings, and questions."

A summary is just telling the main points of the story over again in your own words. A short version of the full thing.
Analysis is where you provide some commentary along the way. You need to mention the themes and character development, the style of language that's used, the sort of imagery that the author employs to create the mood of the story.
Think about the difference between the sports commentator who is just calling the action - "here's the 2-2 pitch" for example - compared with the expert analyst who talks about why on the 2-2 pitch the guy went for a high fast ball.
Analysis interprets and explains what's happening; summary just says what's happening.

ok a summary is where you summerise...i know...anyway to do a summary you are bring together the key concepts of the book and general idea and message being portrayed.
def of sum:- The main purpose of such a simplification is to highlight the major points from the genuine (much longer) subject, e.g. a text, a film or an event. The target is to help the audience get the gist in a short period of time.
a analysis is more complex. where you go more into detail about why things are the way you are is there anything to support the concepts behind the story.
def of ana:-The process of dismantling or separating into constituent elements in order to study the nature, function, or meaning; the result of this process
so pretty much a summary is just giving the basic idea of the story in shorter detail and analysis is where you go more indepth and say well this is because of this and this follows this logic and blar blar blar.. analysis will be more common the older you get. were you explain characteristic and stuff of a topic.

The summary of a story is a basic description of what the story is about, hitting on the main points. An analysis goes a bit deeper, with more details, and what effects characters had on one another, and the message the author may have been trying to relay as a whole.

A summary is a shortened version of the story to give an idea of what the story is about. It's something like the trailer of a film or a coming TV program.
An analysis is a breakdown of the story in important chunks and giving reasons for why things happened at a particular instance. Usually a psychological rundown. What metaphors are used and a general critique of the writing.

Summarizing is merely retelling the story quickly by going over the main points in the plot. So basically you're just telling a quick version of the story and what happened.
An analysis is your interpretation of the story. In the analysis you would reflect on what you thought were the key parts and why, or you could offer your opinion about different things that happened in the story and why they are important to the overall message or something like that.
Hope this helps, good luck!

A summary is just a recap of what happened in the story. You're just paraphrazing the plot of the story into it's key points. Basically a summary is just this happened, this happened, etc. It's usually not more than a page in length.
An analysis is more in depth. It is your interpretation of the literary themes in the novel, story etc. I found a website to explain it in better detail.
