  • In languages that write right to left why do numbers go the other way?

I lived in Libya for a couple of years back in 1960. The language reads from right to left, same as Hebrew. The one thing I did remember and still know to this day is the numbers, although written in Arabic script, are written left to right. I don't know if this is the same in other languages that have a right/left script... BUT!

Modern maths can be done either way round, logically, and give a logical result so why is this contra-direction inbuilt into the language?

  • Why is it that the only people with purpose are atheists or agnostics?

This isn't a snub at faiths but...

All faiths have similar structure. Live your life in a certain way. Be in the world but not OF the world. Keep your distance from the unbeliever. When you "die" you will be judged and punished/rewarded accordingly.

In all of this hoo-haa there is no mention of why you were put on the planet to start with and while you're here, what is your purpose.Having studied Christian, Jewish, Islamic and far Eastern faiths there is the same question.

    Now read my question again.

  • Al Qaeda bosses ethics?

This is an addendum to a previous question asking the stupidity rating of Al Qaeda recruits.

All churches throughout the world have a 'head' of organisation. Iran is led by the Islamic leaders; C of E's have the Archbishop of Canterbury; there's the Pope and so on. Wherever any of the teachings of the faith are questionable history has hunted down the heretics and blasphemers and dealt with them accordingly.

Now I've studied the Bible; the Quran; the teachings of Lao Tsu and Confucius. In the case of even the extreme faiths if ever there is a hassle with a threat on the faith then you take the battle directly to the causes of the hassle.

If Al Qaeda are using methods not 'kosher' with the beliefs of the faith then why aren't the leaders of the faith dealing with it? Surely they are as guilty as those they are ignoring? Or is it purely politics? If that's the case then what have the public to do with it?

Al Qaeda do not have Allah backing them. They are merely cowardly murderers getting some gullible schmuck to do their dirty work for them and using their 'faith' as a cover.

    Refute my logic.

  • How stupid are Al Qaeda recruits?

The latest supposed recruit was that idiot who injured himself recently with a failed aircraft bomb attempt. This guy was a London University graduate. What was he attacking? Who did he have a beef against? Was it all those evil passengers? What the hell are the Al Qaeda recruitment people telling their prospective recruits? Surely a University person has enough brain to realise that whatever the complaint is about, it isn't a problem with Twin Tower office workers; London bus drivers or Pakistani poor people.

If you're being recruited for the murder of innocent people then shouldn't you be questioning the values of the people persuading you? If you have a GENUINE gripe then go for the person CAUSING the gripe, not some poor, poverty stricken little Pakistani child or whatever other innocents you can find.

  • The last time we had floods this bad was....?

Lately we're getting a mess of media attention to bad weather 'anomalies'. Each time there is a reference to the 'fact' that the rain/floods/wind wasn't this bad since, say, 1921. They then add that this is due to a temperature increase of one or two degrees brought about by the old yawn factor global warming.

This being the case; what caused it in 1921?

  • Only the clued up need answer?

    I'm running XP Home.

I had a mobile phone whose software I'd added to the computer. One of the package items was Outlook 2002. I changed my phone and uninstalled Outlook as I had no use for it. Since then I'm getting a 'glitch'.

If I run a specifically Microsoft product such as DOS, Internet Explorer or even Advanced Windows Care I get a box come up asking me where the installation disk is for Outlook 2002.

I thought I'd reinstall Outlook but without the phone it won't accept the software package. A new uninstall was therefore out of the question. I'm assuming that there is probably something in the registry that is kicking all of this off. Any help in getting rid of this hassle would be gratefully received.

    Thanks in advance.

  • How much of God's word is in the Bible?

A favourite phrase when the Bible (Christian) is mentioned is "the word of God."

In my experience there are a whole mess of books that the church has chosen to remove or reject from the modern Bible. The most common ones are the books of the Apocrypha. There are, however, a load of other books that the church has expunged.

    Here's the full question:

If these books were removed on the say so of a human organisation(s), how did they deduce that what they removed was not the word of God and that the remainder WAS?

  • Regarding the development of black holes?

It is my understanding that gravity is the effect of one mass upon another mass when they are within a certain distance. This being the case, the larger mass should exert a greater gravitational pull upon the smaller mass.

Mass, I believe, is the 'weight' of an object without any external force on it such as gravity and it is measured in a single unit such as pounds, kilos or whatever. Whereas 'weight' is the result of the gravitational pull on its mass, which really, I suppose, should be measured in Newtons.

Now here's where understanding breaks down...

If you have a chunk of lead of a particular mass or a chunk of wood of the same mass then if the centre of that chunk was the same distance away from another mass, the gravitational effect should be the same, n'est pas?

This being the case; if a star died and shrunk or collapsed in on itself then surely its mass doesn't change. It just gets smaller but with the same constituent atoms. What makes it a black hole gravity well?

  • Where is the latest book?

From Genesis through to Revelation there has been a chronologically constant stream of books. This includes the Jewish and Christian apocryphal books as well as the books that were banned by the Nicene council. Needless to say, there has been a constant written history up until the Revelation.

In two thousand years there have been no new ones. Why is that? Did the religion stop after the Revelation?

  • I need a George V coat of arms?

I'm not sure if this is the right area to ask this but here goes...

I have a friend who is involved with the refurbishment of an old 1929 vehicle. The reference I was given was that it had the "by royal appointment" heraldry on the side. Also that it was specifically George V coat of arms.

The nearest I've found for this was on flikr but it was extremely pixilated.

Can anyone direct me to a decent picture on the web? I'd be extremely grateful. Thanks in advance.

  • Why was Joseph's blood line important?

In Matthew 1:16 it gives Joseph's blood line. This goes all the way back to Abraham. The big prophesy about the coming of the Messiah was that he would be from the house of David or line of David. Matthew 1 shows a direct route alright but Jesus and Joseph weren't blood relations, so what was Matthew trying to prove?

  • Concerning Abraham's new title?

In Genesis there is a mention that Abraham is called 'the Hebrew'. This is the very first use of the word. Where does it come from and what did it mean? Abraham, I believe, came from Ur in Babylon. Does this have anything to do with it?

  • For Mondra and Mike Z?

A love song I wrote for my wife many years ago. I would value your input:

Linda. My Linda, a long love affair

    And only myself your reward

    And I love you.

Years spent together. Sad moments we've had,

But every one worth it to me.

    Slowly creeping down the backstreets

    Of memory lane.

    Just a moment ago

With the one that I love.

After all the years with the hopes and the pain.

I love you, my Linda, my love.

    You know I do.

I love you, my Linda, my love.
