Opening a pet shop. I just purchased a 115 year old mill that is very well known in my location.?

I will be selling 95% dogs and I require my breeders to certify that only humane breeding methods are used. Also, I am going to inspect the breeding facilities at least once per year. I will provide a guarantee to my customers. Because of the historic nature of my building, I was thinking of incorporating it into the name. I would call my business "The Puppy Mill". Is that a bad idea? I am actually running a VERY reputable business.

Update:

Alright, I get the idea. In 1920, the mill became a shoe factory for a while. How about "The Puppy Factory"?

I actually think its nice. I mean it represents that your taking something bad and making it right, total irony! I think you will need a LOT of publicity, even more word of mouth, about how friendly everyone is there and how up to par your standards are. But once people see the quality of your business they will appreciate it as well. Another thing u could do, if possible, is have the breeders, and maybe the parents, into the location to answer questions and all that jazz.

Bad idea. Why would you name your business a name with such a bad rep? I would go for using the historic but leave out the mill. I wish you luck with today's economy and what will you do with the puppies when they don't sell and they become to old that people aren't interested? Around here, in the midwest, they are auctioned, dumped at pounds or euthanized. I do hope you have thought that far into the future when you are competing against puppy mills, back yard breeders and large businesses.

Reputable breeders do NOT sell to petshops.. you will still be supplied by back yard breeders and commercial breeders (AKA puppy mills). It doesnt matter if you inspect these breeders.. so what if they have clean facilities and the dogs get vet care? Most people do provide that to their PET dogs.. they are still not breeding responsibly.

I dont think calling your shop "The Puppy Mill" would be appropriate.. yes it was a mill, however that term has a bad connotation.. it would make people assume that you are getting puppies from mills (which you would be anyways.. and back yard breeders are not much better than a puppy mill)

Any petshop selling puppies is NOT a reputable buisiness.

    BAD IDEA!

NO reputable breeder will ever sell to a pet store let alone one called "The Puppy Mill"!

Even the worst breeders think they are reputable and only do what's good for the dogs.

Come one, did you really think this through? You will have a whole crowd of protesters on your Grand Opening, trust me I should know because I'm more then happy to protest a pet store that using animals to make a profit!

Er...yeah. BAD idea. LOL, Although I don't know if you understand the "reality" of you getting puppies from reputable breeders. Most wouldn't sell to a Pet Shop.

P.S. just what is a "humane breeding method"???? lol

And are you a Mill Troll?

Its obvious all you care about is making money and not the safety of the animals otherwise you would never suggest such a thing or even purchase such a business!!!

Open a retail pet supply store not a live animal shop!!!

People like you go into business with their eyes half closed- you think oh, i'll just ask my suppliers to provide a paper and I know everything is ok! Oh yeah... AND I'll also visit that facility 1 day out of 365 days.. just to see if the animals sortof look ok on that day! Do you realize how absurd you sound?

If you actually cared about the animals and not just the money you would NEVER go into this business!!! Anyone who cares doesnt sell to a retail storefront!!!!

If a puppy were to find its way to the public raised in the conditions stated by the animal rights activist that paint such a gruesome picture only to get you to donate and buy used dogs that they pocket money from tax free. This said puppy raised in these conditions do not exists and if they do they are so hardy they may live over 20 years. It is physically impossible for a viable litter of puppies to survive the conditions the HSUS PETA and all the others crying for your money claim that Licensed USDA kennels inspected raise their dogs in. Please grow up people and demand they be accountable for their horrid lies which destroy lives and take clean jobs away from the American economy. Sup[port your local pet store do not take a chance on your children's lives by buying a used dog from a rescue. many of them obtain these dogs from the streets of third world countries

That's a TERRIBLE idea, especially if you are going to the lengths to make sure the animals are kept and bred humanely. The negative association with puppy mills is pretty widespread.

No reputable breeder will sell pups to a pet store, only puppy mills and BYB's.

That would be a horrible name! What was the actual name of the mill? Maybe you could add the actual name of the mill in there some how instead!
