What to do when a dog scratches itself entirely too much?
Hello All,
I've noticed my dog has been scratching herself entirely too much. It is to the point where i'm finding red soars on her skin. I believe she might have flea. I have checked her coat, and don't seem to find any, but I do understand fleas are very small, microscopic size so maybe i can't see. I've been putting some flea powder on her fur, but i don't think it's getting any better. I do want to treat her minor soars; so my question is peroxide safe to treat animals that have soars? Also, what is a good bathing product for a dog that sooths itching, and that will get rid of potential fleas as well as other pests that locks onto a dog's fur coat?
Thank You
My dog is half colley and chow. Thank you for all of the insightful answers. I will go to the pet store tomorrow morning and pick up some products.
By the way, the food that I usually buy are I Ams dry food and I rarely buy her alpo wet food. I've been buying her I ams and alpo , and haven't noticed her scratching herself excessively until about a week ago.

You take her to the vet and get her checked.

Go out and get a very good flea and tick shampoo like mycodex. Give you dog a very good and thorough bath. Then wait for a day or so and see if she stops itching.
In the mean time check the ingredients on the dog food you're feeding. If it has corn, wheat and soy these could be the reason for her itching as they are the leading causes of dog allergies.
If after a day or so her itching does not get better take her to the vet and have them check it out.
Good luck

While you need to use a good flea preventative ( I have never found a flea collar that worked - just the liquids applied monthly at the shoulders) but there are other reasons dogs scratch, Allergies are common in dogs, most related to the food. Some cannot have wheat or gluten, other cannot have "normal" meat such as lamb, beef or chicken. They must have only duck, venison, salmon or kangaroo. See the Vet soon.

Well, Peroxide will just dry her skin but I am not sure were she is scratching what do you mean? Baby shampoo or even Just Add Water Shampoo, they work really well! if it doesn't seem to make a difference then take her to the vet. My dog did that for a week I used some Baby Shampoo and Just Add Water Shampoo today she hasn't itched once!

The dog most likely has a food allergy. What are you feeding her? Keep in mind that corn, wheat and soy (which are grains) are the leading cause of food allergies. Scratching consistantly, licking in their paws, and hot spots (missing patches of hair) are all signs of allergies.
For the sores, you can use hydrocoritzone cream. You can get it at a pet store or hopefully the vets. For the scratching, switch her food to a non grain. No corn, wheat or soy. And get a duck, venison, or fish based protein. After a few weeks you should see improvement. For treatment, get Frontline or Revolution. Don't waste your money on a powder or spray...no flea and tick collars. They are not as affective as Frontline.
Good luck and I hope she gets better!

Take the dog to the vet and get a professional diagnosis about the cause of the itching. It could be all kinds of things, maybe more than one thing, and some conditions cannot be successfully treated with things you buy at a store. Forget the flea powder, it's not very effective.

To get rid of the fleas immediately....this is a ONE time ONLY remedy. You can NOT do it all the time, as it will strip the dog of its natural oils.
Dawn. Yes, Dawn dish washing detergent. I am apart of an organization that cares for dogs, and when a flea infested dog is brought in, we immediately use the Dawn. You can NOT put it on the dogs head or get it in their eyes. You just want to bath the majority of him.
Next, to keep the fleas away & kill 'em, make a mixture containing these PURE essential oils. You can get these all natural oils at your local health food store.... Lemon, Eucalyptus, Citronella & Orange. (Its also good for mosquito's too)
PS...what kind of dog do you have?

Buy dog moistening shampoo and get the flea tubes (6 pack)
to put on her head/back area once a month. She should have
some wet food mixed with the dry.

A flea and tick spray may be your best option. (I think it works better than the powder) They also have moisturizing shampoo that treats irritated skin. Or they also sell ointments for red sores and irritated spots for dogs. You can buy all of this at any Wal-Mart/Target or petstore.

well itching occurs in every dog having flea.but if you are dam sure that your dog dont have any one then you must bathe it daily.keep it in clean environment.dont give him food that can heat its body.sometime body heat can make the dog to look dull
