Literalist Christians, when Noah rescued the surface creatures in his ark, how did the fish survive?
Following from an earlier question:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=200905...
The flood covered all land, so must have been 8,848m deep.
The normal vegetation used as a food source would now be 8,848m deeper than normal, and the pressure increase of 17,700% would not be survivable even for flatfish.
The fish and other sea creatures would have to swim closer to the surface to avoid this pressure increase.
So, as their only food supply was 8.8km too deep to reach, what did they eat?
@Richardatf: Predators do indeed eat other fish. However, as these are a small proportion of fish, the others would starve.
Mountainsides are covered in trees or are barren, not with marine plant life, so the fish could not eat anything there. While there may be a limited number of floating/surface creatures that could survive, the vast majority would not.
Even flatfish would have to survive off vegetation from the upper slopes of the Himalayas and Andes, which are not exactly famous for the underwater plants growing there. Nice try, though!
@Z Z (Jersey Girl): I am unaware of the Earth being any less mountainous during all of mankind's existence. If you have confirming evidence of this, thereby refuting the mountains (!) of evidence to the contrary, please present it and likely get a Nobel Prize!
@Naomi: <<I think you need to cite a source>>
I did the maths in the question at the link above. Feel free to check the figures yourself.
@Rallie: I take your point, but I'm aiming at those who believe the Bible literally. If it's reduced to metaphors or taken with a pinch of salt, you could take almost any other meaning out of it.

Do not many fish eat other fish?
Also, was there not some areas where the land was close to surface?
Most ocean going vegetation floats on the surface as well.
Plankton consist of any drifting organisms (animals, plants, archaea, or bacteria) that inhabit the pelagic zone of oceans, seas, or bodies of fresh water. Plankton are defined by their ecological niche rather than their phylogenetic or taxonomic classification. They provide a crucial source of food to more familiar aquatic organisms such as fish.
Any water in the sea that is not close to the bottom is in the pelagic zone.
I admire your effort in this question.
edit - you have ignored the fact, stated above, that most ocean going vegetation is floating. But you will draw your own smug conclusions regardless of facts anyway. No skin off my teeth, believe what you want. Perhaps if you were to truly study to know the truth, you would find that there is not a single society on earth that does not have a written history or an oral tradition that describes the flood. Do your math to explain that. And quit using the metric system, this is America (if you're not in America, we will invade and take you over soon)
p.s. its 8.8392m

Two things you need to know about the flood which address your arguments. God is all about survival of the fit and natural selection. This is not anti-God. Evolution allows for things to keep existing on a changing planet. A large number of fish probably did die, but those which survived adapted to the new conditions. By the way, we have many many many more species of animals than existed during Noah's time. For example, even though there are 5 or 6 species of elephant, only one ancestral elephant pair existed and was taken on the ark. After the flood, animals reproduced and dispersed and adapted to new lands and environments, and evolved though natural selection.

Except for fish in the aquarium, some species never get drowned on deep water. Even if the flood swept them inland or away, their deaths will have no match to the numbers of eggs the survivor will lay and hatch.
Then you also have to understand that the world in the eyes and knowledge of Noah was only the world he knew and have roamed about and also possibly from what he heard from the immediate people around him as to how far have they gone on their travel which mostly were on foot. This is evidenced by their knowledge that the world was flat. There are other areas that was not affected by that flood and it is also not true that Noah's children have repopulated the world by themselves.
Your math is good but it is not necessary in your argument.

as the bible tells there was not much watter on the earth . there was a guyers that watered all the lands . and a river went out of eden and broke into 4 heads . so there wouldn't have been many fish to start with . as the earth was over ran with people . but the rivers were deep , think of the meridian trench as a puddle . and have no doubt that those fish were very durable . and now think of how the whale was able to fly . no doubt that they are not what we refer to as whales today . no more than the rivers and lands outside of eden are the same ones as today . those are named in remembrance of before the flood . people are quick to look at the animals today as being alive then . that is a foolish notion . then you have the ones that say it is from evolution . but in truth it is a matter of de evolution .

I don't know but somehow they managed. Fish are resiliant that way!
According to the Bible... the Earth was not as mountainous at the time of the flood as it is now... read Genesis around the 11th chapter (i think)... first came the flood then the continental shift (which in turn creates Mountains.) this is my VERY rough answer... I am sure if this were posed to a scientist or theologian they'd be better qualified to answer than anyone on here!
Have a good evening sir.

Since the person who wrote that part of the bible did not know about those creatures, they did not exist in that part of the story.

Expect the fundies to twist science and logic to make their story work.
You just received two answers that did that. Look out for more.

dayum - its like debating the logistics of filming Bobba Fet or Jabba The Hut but in this case we can't even trace down the original authors for clarification since no one knows who actually wrote the book in the first place.

of course all the salt water fish died during the flood, since it didn't rain saltwater, lol

All things are possible with God, PLUS I think you need to cite a source.
