Securing wireless router?
I have a Linksys WRTU54G-TM wireless router, I can access the router setup page through my web browser (Internet explorer) But I cannot seem to get this thing enabled so that the wireless is secure. I want to set it up so that my neighbor's or anyone else driving by cannot use it, but that I can still do so on my desktop and laptop, both are using wireless.
Thanks, plain language please, I am not an IT person, just a regular guy.

You choose a SSID that doesn't easily identify you, ie, no personal names or clues. That is broadcast for all. Look at available wireless to see others.
Then choose WEP or WKA as security type with corresponding password key. WKA with a long alpha/numeric code is best. (remember any code can be broken by the determined)
Ensure both router and computer have the same info and go. The first time you sign your computer onto wireless, after the router is set, you will have to enter the security type and code.

You can set up a WEP or WPA password which would need to be entered upon trying to connect to the router, WPA being the more secure.
Also, disabling the broadcast of your SSID (Router name) is another good bet but in order to connect to your router you would have to manually enter the SSID and then the password. This would mean that anyone driving past your house etc. wouldn't know you had a wireless router.
You can also enable MAC address control. Every device has its own MAC address which can be used as an ID. If you find the the MAC address of your PC and allow only that MAC address to connect, nothing else will be allowed access to the network.
It's pretty easy to set up as long as you know which options you need to change.

Your best bet is to look carefully at the user guide that came with this router. It should show you how to set the security key. If you really have trouble following that then call Linksys help line. They are very good.

Well, set WEP security or WPA.
WEP is easier, you make a (ascii) Pass Phrase (password) and then on laptop/computer when you see the wireless, it will ask for that phrase. Type it in and the computer will remember it. So its done once.
If you broadcast your SSID name, then make it unusual. So no one knows its you.

Just set up a password. If you can't figure it out just go to the instruction manual it came with and read on how to set it up.
