Alternative to the Peace Corps?
Hello there, I was wondering if anyone could tell what the best alternatives are for the Peace Corps. The reason the Peace Corps doesn't work for me, Is that i want to go out right after high school and the Peace Corps is looking for people who have a 4 year college degree. I want to be abroad for about a year or so, the length of the Peace Corps doesn't bother me I would be willing to serve with them if they would take me. I've looked in to Americorps which is the only alternative i know of but i would kind of like to leave the united states and help others abroad. So basically I'm looking for a Peace Corps type program that i can qualify for right out of high school.

There aren't any, unless you pay your own way.
Harsh though it sounds, the developing world doesn't need people with good intentions but no skills. If some organization flew you to Peru / Kenya / Samoa to paint a school (or another task that didn't need a degree), you'd be taking a job from a Peruvian / Kenyan Samoan.
There are dozens of programs that let you work 2 weeks to 6 months. You pay for your own transportation, food, medical insurance and rent. Some of them are "Good hearted vacations" - spending two weeks painting a school instead of drinking beer on a beach. Some are more formal. Your church may have missionaries that "witness by doing" - painting a school instead of preaching.

Check out AmeriCorps. I think it is similar to the PC, but you stay in the country, and I think you choose the commitment period. Good luck!
