In honor of Memorial Day tomorrow who was the greatest baseball player to have participated in a war?

Self-explanatory question. The player must have played baseball and been in a war whether it be before, during, or after. I would like a top 3, but you can only name 1 if you really want. Please support answer with reasoning if possible.

Thanks and please star!

Thanks to those who are in the military and/or have been in the military!

How soon they forget. Warren Spahn won more games after the age of 30 than anyone in history partly because he was shot and wounded in WWII. Ted Williams was a brave man who sacrificed playing time to his patriotism, yes, but he was a pilot. Spahn was a rifleman, a grunt. A machine gunner got him in the back of his foot.

Obviously people are forgetting about Willie Mays.

He enlisted in the United States Military in 1952 and served stateside during the Korean War.

Ted Williams. Not one but two career interruptions to fly in the military and still one of the greatest careers ever. Amazing.

Ted Williams, no question. Greatest pure hitter of all time, lost a lot of potential home runs serving during WWII (even if it was more of a celebrity role he played)
