Harry P is fantasy, there have been a tendency to blur genres. This is one example I thinks it's marketing people at the publishing houses trying to get a book to appeal to a larger audience. So many Sci Fi readers will never read fantasy and the same goes for some fantasy readers will never read Sci Fi.

You see this in the horror genres slasher flicks and books are called horror. I think Slasher should be it's own genre, but Horror sounds better for marketing than Slasher.

no it is fantasy. Sci fi.. is science fiction, as in some fictional basis from science. If someone had created their powers then that would be sci fi but it is strictly fantasy

Harry Potter is completely fantasy. In order to be science fiction, there would have to be some sort of scientific reasoning to the magyk within the books. This is not the case; the magyk is purely magyk, nothing more. There is no scientific explanation for the magyk they can work.

A science fiction story is futuristic, pessimistic, scientific and offers a warning to society.

Potter is fantasy and is considered a young adult drama involving the mythical dark arts but ultimately it is optimistic.

I don't think so. I don't think of it as anything science fiction-y, like aliens, spaceships, robots, etc. Nothing futuristic, or technological.
