Can I get my data back? Portable external hard drive...point where cable connects is too loose/broken?

I have a WD portable external hard drive. The point where the cable that connects it to the computer plugs in one the device is too loose and now of course doesn't work, probably from when I tripped over the cable recently (how stupid). I want to know if it is possible to take it somewhere and get back what I had on it without paying a huge price as my budget isn't exactly very large.

Update:

[in response to first answer] yeah, I don't really trust myself messing with it as I am not really experienced with this kind of thing and would be afraid of breaking it more (and I'm not sure how to get the casing off of it correctly) but can I get someone else to do that without too much trouble?

HI, If you can dismantle the outer casing then you should be able to just remove the hard drive from insode and then put it into an external caddy. Connect it up to your PC (via USB) and you should be able to use the drive again. Suitable caddies can be obtained from various suppliers of computer components.
