The advise is simple - if you need mobile broadband and planning to get it anyway, why not get a free laptop with it?

The companies that are offering it are using the old formula: sell shavers cheap or give them away for free and then charge a lot for blades. Same with printers, the printers are cheap, but the ink is not cheap at all.

They'll give you a free laptop and charge you a lot for mobile broadband, but if you NEED this service anyway, go for it.

The smart way to think about it is this: I'll get it because I need mobile broadband, not because I want a free laptop.

I assume your talking about the Mini's that are being offered by the cell phone companies. I have one and have sold several (before the free giveaway). My clients all adore theirs. Couple of things to note:

    1. sold state vs normal hard drive.

Sold state has no moving parts, basicly the hard drive is an internal usb flash drive. This is really neato but they are small, 8 or 16 gig storage only. Normal drives are around 160 gig. (I prefer solid state personally, but if you have massive space then this won't work)

    2. Gig limit

All cell phone companies charge a hefty fee if you go over 5 gigs a month. This limit is fine for email, surfing.. but if you watch movies.. Lookout!!

    3. Speed

These are not as fast of normal laptops. Less processor Less ram, but are fine for just checking your email on the go.
