is this possible re: a 12 yr old Lovebird?

He was a free flier he always came home we live in the country. We he and I have a certain whistle I'd whistle and he'd screech letting me know where he was. Today while working in the yard I heard him and saw him way up in the trees. He was playing hide and seek with me. I have left a cage on the deck for him. He's been gone almost 2 mos. Could he be living in a bird house and eating at bird feeders he comes across? I plan on whistling for him again tomorrow. Has anybody ever had this happen?

Update:

thanks for the optimistic hope for us..I plan on baiting him with a female Rainbow lovie and and a book. He'd sit on the deck rail with me and wait til I put the book down LOL

Update 2:

he sat on the rail...LOL

No I haven't had this happen but a friend of mine had something similar happen. She was a bird rehabber and babied an injured bluejay . When it was released it remained in the area for a while and disappeared . The next year it returned with it's mate and waited to be handfed treats. The following year it returned with it's mate and a youngster.

You may get your bird back yet!! Good luck.
