What is the proper way to dispose of a tattered flag?
Please don't answer if you don't know or don't have a suggestion. I've already gone to several websites, and they all say, "burning", but I don't know if there's a ceremony involved. I'm trying to do this the proper, respectful way.
Carolus- Since you don't allow e-mail, I must answer you this way. If you have a flag on your house or car;in our case, both, they will become tattered with the wind damage. So, I guess you can blame God.
We have an American Legion in the neighborhood, so I'll go there today if the thunderstorms stop long enough.

Turn the flag over to one of your local veterans organizations. My American Legion Post has a Flag Retirement Ceremony each Flag Day where we Retire (Burn) over 100 flags.

You can call any Veterans Organization...
They will probably be able to direct you
to some Vets Organization that does it...
Yes there is a ceremony for Disposing
of a Tattered Old Flag...
Sorry I forget the way it goes...
They cut out one Star...refold the Flag
Come to Attention, Salute while they are
being Burned...something like that ???

As the first two posters said....if not possible,... the proper way to dispose of the flag is to burn it. Reverently, with dignity, and the manner it is done will be best told to you by the Scouts in your area, if you choose to do it yourself.

Contact your local Boy Scouts or VFW. The BSA have a special ceremony where they burn American flags WITH HONOR.

Contact your town's American Legion. They take the old flags from people, and they perform the ceremony for burning them. They'll do it right, just call them.

You can turn your tattered flag into any VFW or Elks Lodge and they will dispose of it for you, properly.
Edit: Unlike Gumbie's Elk's Lodge, our local lodge does perform an annual flag retirement ceremony. If there is a lodge in your area, you can call and ask -- if not, call your local VFW.

it is not my intention to answer this question.only ferlections.
Tatterd by whom? Why?What happened next? What were the reactions of those watching that exercise of tatering? How they( those who loved /got attached to it over generations) feel afterwads? Is there no way to mend it?I think there is but it takes time.Habits at likes go astray very oftenwith push in of blind dislikes. But believe me it can be mended though a new covered falg could result with new simile.
Then why you ask this qustion? Don't you know the law of evolution-how it works?
Sorry if I can't satisfy your answer. That flag may have many meanings-all hidden!
