Dell XPS 1530, blank screen w/ active cursor after login screen...?

Hey everyone,

My knowledge is with macs, windows machines are basically alien to me. Anyway my brother has an XPS 1530 and I was installing Norton Antivirus on it when something from an older antivirus program pops up. I hit cancel on that window and then the computer freezes. I force shut it down, wait then reboot. I get as far as the login, type in the password and then the screen goes blank (backlit but just black) but with an active cursor. I can still eject CD's and move the cursor around, but no desktop comes up. Any help would be great.

Update:

But cant seem to do much from safe mode, even if I shut it down and restart it from safe mode it doesnt seem to do anything.

Update 2:

I can get it to boot in safe mode.

Update 3:

I tried rebooting to the last known good configuration, same thing happens once I get past the login screen.

Update 4:

I managed to get back on after some extensive repair and running diagnostics, saved the files I needed and then performed a factory reset. Everything seems to be tip top now.

I'm not sure what the problem is, but you can try to get the laptop into safe mode, and see if you're able to get in that way.

During the boot up process, press F8 (you may want to continually press it as it starts up). This should give you the option to start the laptop is Safe Mode. Which may allow you to reboot to the last known good configuration. This hopefully can undo whatever happened.

Hopefully you'll get an answer from someone who has seen the problem before.

try starting in safe mode by toggling f8 on start up. If this works select safe with networking down load superantispyware and malwarebytes and install and run one at a time . Bet you have a massive virus infection. Good luck Alternatively download software on to usb stick and install in safe mode that way.
