Should the Red Sox call up Clay Buckholz?
OK Clay just came three outs from throwing a perfect game in AAA and now is 3-0 with a 1.15 ERA. His control is outstanding and he is consistently hitting 97 on the radar gun. With the Red Sox rotation struggling is it time they give him a call up?

I believe that soon the Red Sox will trade Penny, and then bring up Buchholz for a little bit. They need to bring him up some time, I mean this guy is tearing it up in AAA. I think it was yesterday he took a perfect game into the 9th inning and ended up with a one hitter! That is just incredible. Last year he was really bad in the majors, but he has now fixed his problems and I think he is ready for the majors. I think they should give him a call up, but I don't know when that will happen. The Red Sox have almost too much pitching. They should either use it, or trade somebody for a shortstop or power hitter.

Well they might if they had a problem with one of their starters, but Beckett just threw a great game against the Mets, Penny has been very effective the last three weeks or so, Wakefield has been terrific, Dice-K is just back from the DL, and Lester has struggled, but he's outstanding when he has his head in the game. And John Smoltz is waiting in the wings, and he must be given the opportunity to start if and when he is healthy enough to do so.
What do the Red Sox need is the more pertinent question. No team carries two DHs, so how Ortiz fares between now and the All-Star break is going to be an important factor in their thinking. Will Lugo emerge as the player they had hoped he would be two years ago? If not, can Lowrie fill the bill? Will Drew and Baldelli hold up for most of the season? Is now the time to be looking for a new young catcher, or if the Indians fade badly will Martinez be on the trading block and how much would it cost to acquire him. (I assume that Joe Mauer will either re-sign with the Twins or the Yankees will offer him a deal he can't refuse. Otherwise, biding your time to sign Mauer would be the thing to do.)
There is no pressing need for Buchholz right now. That could change in the blink of an idea, but if that doesn't change then the Sox need to have a plan to improve this year's team or next year's team with a judicious trade that fills a need. Maybe it will be a big trade to address a big need, or a smaller trade to fill a smaller need.
Buchholz has the physical ability to be a number one starter for years if he can develop the mental side of his game to the same level. What he is doing at Pawtucket is evidence that he has matured and is capable of dominating Triple A baseball. Whether he comes up this year or next, he must be ready physically and mentally for the huge challenge of pitching in the AL East against many of the best pitchers in baseball. More seasoning at Triple A cannot hurt Clay in the short run.

The Red Sox are called "The Nation" while the Yankees are called "The Empire". Just some of the MANY names that fans and media choose to call both teams.

If they call him up then who will go down? None of the other starters can really be optioned to AAA. But lets face it, going into today they are still in 1st place so a "shake up" is not really in order now. If they were 4 games back and really struggling to win games then sure, but not now.

Who would you take out? It would make sense to pull Penny out of the equation but then what do you do with him? What if Bucholtz struggles against big league hitters then where do you go? I think it is to early to pull someone out unless there is an injury!

no, he has been overhyped since he threw his no-no!
throwing to triple a is different than pitching to the blue jays
use brad penny, he was an ace a few yrs. ago. remember!
