How can a baseball player have a higher batting average than on base percentage?

Kevin Cash of the NYY has a .182 batting average and a .177 on base percentage. How is that possible?

This was just asked a few days ago.

He has more sac flies than (walks and hit by pitches).

In this particular case, Cash has zero walks and zero hit by pitches, whereas he has one sacrifice fly.

I'll attempt to explain the whole thing.

    OBP:

    (H + BB + HBP) / (AB + BB + HBP + SF)

The second number is basically plate appearences. Sac Flies don't count towards average, so they don't count as an at-bat. But they do go towards OBP because it's a PA. However, since he didn't get on base for a sac fly, we can't add it into the first number. Since he has no BB + HBP, let's simplify it. I'll use his stats.

    (1 + 0) / (17 + 0 + 1) = 1 / 18, whereas batting average isn't unbalanced, and will be 1 / 17. Confusing?

Although confusing-connor is correct. Baseball has weird things like walks, sac flies, etc not counting as at bats and errors and fielders choice not counting towards obp..besides ops is the more important stat anyway...and as a lifelong yanks fan don't worry bout cash so much we'll have jorge and jose back before u know it and cash will go back to scranton along with cervelli most likely..

Higher batting average makes you a better player for your team. More home runs lets you earn more money because baseball is a business and home runs brings in fans.

He is known for defense and hardly plays so he gets into weird situations like this.
