What will the greenies do if Nuclear is added to the Waxman/Gore climate bill?

Will they support this bill if it includes Nuclear, or will they pitch temper tantrums and throw the baby out with the bathwater if Nuclear is added to the mix of non CO2 contributing options like solar and wind?

Some greenies will sometimes assert they are in favor of nuclear in public discussions. But when confronted with the building of a new plant their anti nuke roots show through and they all come together to prevent it. They are philosophically against any technology that will allow our industrial society to prosper and survive in the USA.

Gore is not part of this legislation. Which section of the Waxman/Markey bill prohibits nuclear power? The bill inherently supports nuclear power in that utilities will have an incentive to move to viable low carbon options. Wind power happens to be more economically viable than nuclear fission at this time. I'm speculating, but perhaps the complaint is that nuclear power isn't receiving the same degree of research dollars as other low carbon options (such as solar power). If this is the primary concession needed to see passage of this important legislation, I would be quite pleased. Sadly, too many politicians are blinded by their ideology and strangled by their fossil fuel interests (i.e. Inhofe) to support the legislation, even if nuclear power is front and center. Others point out that the legislation targets and prices fall short of mitigation goals. I see it as a good first step.

I think assuming that all those that support "green" energy technology are against nuclear power is wrong. The new nuclear plant technology is much safer, (although the old was not unsafe) and the fast neutron reactors will actually consume much of the nuclear waste that was produced by the old plants.

Maybe we've come full circle. I remember in the 1970's people were angry enough about nuclear energy to take to the streets. Now people have found a new Bogie Man to worry about so resistance to nuclear reactors isn't what it used to be.

People aren't angry enough to march in the streets anymore - they're just angry enough to vote for additional taxes as long as someone else has to pay them.

    hahaha.

Why do you assume that "greenies" have a problem with nuclear power?

I support nuclear power, but not nuclear bombs.

Most global warming proponents do support nuclear, believe it or not. But then I guess you can't expect someone who thinks every global warming proponent is a "greenie" to understand that.
