To defrag in vista, you need to have an account with admin rights if I am not wrong. The other possibility is that some of the services required for the defrag to run are not enabled, and this is causing problems. A third possibility is that there is file system corruption and you need to run chkdsk/r to fix it before you can defrag.

You can always download the free trial version of Diskeeper 2009, install it and try defragging with it. It's an excellent defragger, and works far better than the windows default defragger.

Firstly eliminate all malware, run AV scans and download a good spyware scanner.

Some common reasons why you cant run a defrag are-

Programs interrupting its function can cause the defragmenter to restart or hang. That’s one of the drawbacks of the built in defragger, you cant defrag and use the PC simultaneously.

Disk errors, (run chkdsk before defrag)

Lack of free space , the built in defragmenter needs atleast 15% free space, for which you can try running a diskcleanup.

Fragmented system files which the Windows defragger cannot defrag neither can any of the free defraggers.

I'd suggest installing a third party tool like Diskeeper, which has many advantages like real time background defrag, system file defrag, low free space defrag and a nice GUI. Try the free 30 day trial version.

Unlike XP on vista defrag runs in the background. It is working and defragging it is just not giving you the window to see what it is doing like on XP

You can also go under the settings and tell vista when or how often you would like it to defrag your pc.

Some do it monthly I do mine weekly because of the amount of downloads I get.

Download this. It's a free download and it's recommended by all the PC magazines and is 100% better and faster at defragging than the windows version. You can also look at other files as it defrags unlike the windows version. I use it all the time.

On windows Vista its 'automatic' its on a timer - comes on once a week (wednesdays) in the AM does its job and then turns its self turns off - when I click on the page it tells me when it was last on and the date and time the next one will be - I never have to touch it. How do you know 'nothing' is happening ?. what are you expecting to see ?............. As long as its 'enabled' it will work.

Go to the control panel - systems - and make sure its 'enabled' - it will show a small flickering green light.

Oh! you be attentive to the thank you to Defrag your no longer elementary force. you in basic terms prefer to be attentive to WHY your force area variations at the same time as that is Degragmenting. straightforward: that's what it Does at the same time as Defragmenting! that is moving around data, and Bit's of information, like once you sparkling your Closet. comparable factor! that is making area available bypass Up & Down, at the same time as in that document company technique.

Quite often with defrag, even though you instruct a defrag of your computer, it will only carry out that instruction automatically on turning your computer on the next time.

If you are concerned, I suggest going to windowsliveonecare and running their scanner which includes defrag.
